Excerpt from The New Life Dawning, and Other Discourses, of Bernard H. Nadal, D.D., Late Professor of Historical Theology in the Drew Theological Seminary Dear Nadal - the generous friend, the genial col league, the cultivated scholar, the tireless student, the tender-hearted, gentlemanly Christian - comes to me often, many times a day, just as he used to when we strolled the groves together: comes knocking at my door, as he was wont, in the evening and in the morning. At this moment his step is in the tessel lated hall, and I am waiting to see him come with his pleasant smile through the open door. He does not come. May be it is that my dull eye Of sense does not see him now. Glad am I that one who knew him well and loved him reverently has been induced, at the promptings of affection, to give permanent form to some of the reminiscences of his beautiful character and life, as he went in and out among us. As it is acted before us, a beautiful life is full of precious though often unconscious ministries, which keep on forever voicing-themselves in our history and working themselves into the fiber and fashion Of our character. Abel, though dead, is speaking still, and the unseen influence of his example goes on touching the shores of human thought and feeling over all the world. The connection is lost to our crude observa tion, but the Infinite, who is interested to pursue the stream through all its intricate windings, discerns each echo and vibration of the hushed voice and finished act, and will gather them all up at last, and place them, a crown of glory, on the head deserving to wear them. It is often not until the vase Is broken that we discover the precious Ointment it contained, even though we were constantly breathing its delicious Odors. We walk along the journey of life with a chosen friend, in a commonplace sort of way, in sweet content, without knowing exactly why, until death lets go a bolt, and our comrade falls then first we learn that it was an angel who had - been walking by our side the ascending chariot reveals the Elijah. After the grass covers away his form, and the places where we met him are vacant, we remember the marvelous charm othis presence, and are surprised that much as we loved him, we really never knew his worth until he had gone from us. This volume confronts an important historical hypothesis with empirical evidence from selected periods of history. The hypothesis in question states that competition among political and legal organisations in developing rules has been a crucial condition for liberty, innovation and growth in the history of mankind. It is due to Immanuel Kant, Edward Gibbon and Max Weber and has been revived and further developed by Nobel-Laureate Douglass C. North who contributes the first chapter. The volume brings together political economists, historians and legal scholars to discuss the role of political competition in the rise and decline of nations - both in theory and in a large number of case studies.

In Roads to Health, G. Geltner demonstrates that urban dwellers in medieval Italy had a keen sense of the dangers to their health posed by conditions of overcrowding, shortages of food and clean water, air pollution, and the improper disposal of human and animal waste. He consults scientific, narrative, and normative sources that detailed and consistently denounced the physical and environmental hazards urban communities faced: latrines improperly installed and sewers blocked; animals left to roam free and carcasses left rotting on public byways; and thoroughfares congested by artisanal and commercial activities that impeded circulation, polluted waterways, and raised miasmas. However, as Geltner shows, numerous administrative records also offer ample evidence of the concrete measures cities took to ameliorate unhealthy conditions. Toiling on the frontlines were public functionaries generally known as viarii, or "road-masters," appointed to maintain their community's infrastructures and police pertinent human and animal behavior. Operating on a parallel track were the camparii, or "field-masters," charged with protecting the city's hinterlands and thereby the quality of what would reach urban markets, taverns, ovens, and mills. Roads to Health provides a critical overview of the mandates and activities of the viarii and camparii as enforcers of preventive health and safety policies between roughly 1250 and 1500, and offers three extended case studies, for Lucca, Bologna, and the smaller Piedmont town of Pinerolo. In telling their stories, Geltner contends that preventive health practices, while scientifically informed, emerged neither solely from a centralized regime nor as a reaction to the onset of the Black Death. Instead, they were typically negotiated by diverse stakeholders, including neighborhood residents, officials, artisans, and clergymen, and fostered throughout the centuries by a steady concern for people's greater health.

The thesis of this volume is that the fields of scholarly enquiry of Education — internationally as well as in South Africa in particular — despite being fields of virile scholarly activity and output, are in need of a major overhaul. In this collected work this want in research is encapsulated in three words: relevance, rigour and restructuring. Research in the scholarly field(s) of Education is predominantly of small scale, non-accumulative, widely condemned as not of a comparable standard to research done in other social sciences, much less upon a par with research in the natural sciences, and lacking structure in the sense of being anchored in a firm theory. To make matters worse, scholars in Education internationally and in South Africa have till very recently eschewed discussion as to the packaging or structuring of knowledge produced by Education research. The book consists of chapters containing original research unpacking these desiderata from a variety of angles. The authors had them served by a variety of methods, from deductively argued position papers, to empirical research, the latter both quantitative (survey research) and qualitative.
