Creason also gives unique insight into the history and philosophy of Freemasonry in America while debunking common myths and misconceptions about the world's largest and oldest fraternal organization. More than fifty specialists have contributed to this new edition of volume 2 of The Cambridge Bibliography of English Literature. The design of the original work has established itself so firmly as a workable solution to the immense problems of analysis, articulation and coordination that it has been retained in all its essentials for the new edition. The task of the new contributors has been to revise and integrate the lists of 1940 and 1957, to add materials of the following decade, to correct and refine the bibliographical details already available, and to re-shape the whole according to a new series of conventions devised to give greater clarity and consistency to the entries.

Excerpt from Letters and Addresses on Freemasonry This kindness of Mr. Gridley was never forgot ten by my father; I trust it never will be forgotten by his children. From that day forth, while Mr. Gridley lived, he was the intimate friend, per sonal and professional, of my father. He died in 1767. My father often resorted to him for friend ly counsel, and, as he was grand master of the lodge, once asked his advice, whether it was worth his while to become a member of the society. So said at that time the Grand Master of the Massachusetts Masons, Jeremy Gridley; and such, I have repeatedly heard my father say, was the reason why he never joined the lodge.
