Excerpt from The Nature of Woman I do not expect for this little volume a large circulation, but I venture to hope that those who are interested in womanhood and manhood will find in its pages something that is worthy of consideration. I have written this book with the deepest and most sincere respect for womanly character and womanly individuality in my mind, and I have tried to write fairly and without the prejudice of the moment; is it too much to ask of those who are my readers a like attitude of mind? It has been my object to make a complex subject as simple as a complex subject can be made, because I hope that the book will be read by those unused to biological thought. It would have been easy to adduce many more facts than I have done in support of my views, but the book would then unavoidably have become technical. I owe this apology to fellow biological students, and on another occasion hope to make good these defects. The author is, of course, writing in his private capacity, and claims no other authority than that which the facts of the subject appear to warrant. Excerpt from The Unveiling of Woman's Original Nature I must ask the public to be tolerant of me if I should have quoted any authors without giving them full credit. I don't hardly think that is possible; still, as I am not familiar with the works of all authors, there is a remote possibility that it may be the case. Another thing I wish to say is that so far as I know I am the first one that has come out in the open and boldly stated that the double standard of morality, and regarding sex as impure, is the cause of syphilis. But if any one else has ever made that statement before me, I am more than willing to give them full credit, for my only intention in stating it was to make the fact known; and if any one discovered it ahead of me, so much the better. Excerpt from Women's Suffrage: The Reform Against Nature In this manner it results that the lot of woman comes to be a lot of abridgment and suppression, much more commonly than we have been oh serving ourselves. As our attention is called to the matter, and we become more completely awake to it, we are surprised to find how many disadvantages are laid upon the condition of woman that no principle of equity permits, and no pretense of reason or necessity justifies. It does not surprise us that, in the savage and bar barons forms of society, she is reduced to the lot of a menial or drudge and well nigh to a beast of burden; or that she is bought and sold for mar riage, apart from any right of consent, and con signed in this manner to a husband whose power is a power of life and death. All such monstrous kinds of wrong we expect to encounter in the bar baric conditions of society. But the real wonder now forcing itself upon' our discovery, is that our own deliberately adjusted laws and institutions are so often unequal, as regards the property rights of men and women and the redress of their per sonal wrongs that women are so often excluded. Excerpt from Studies in the Psychology of Woman If we wish to understand woman, it is not alone sufficient to study the Protes tant woman and the freethinking woman in her inner and outer preliminary condi tions, as has heretofore been done almost exclusively, for both of these are in a certain sense detached. The thought development of the time has carried them along too quickly and torn them out of their roots. The Catholic woman still possesses to-day the connection with nature and the power of emotional expansion, both of which are indispensa ble to the woman. A psychology of the woman without inclusion of the Catholic element would be incomplete; it would even be founded upon a false basis.
