DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from The Natural and Civil History of Vermont, Vol. 1 of 2 Three centuries have passed away since America was first discovered by Colume bus. From that time until now, the all'airs of America have engaged the attention of historians and philosophers. The natural productions of this continent, have been one object of general inquiry. Among the Spanish writers, there are some good essays on the natural history of the southern parts of America. In Canada, some of the physicians and Jesuits were attentive to the natural productions of that part of the continent and have left some valuable pieces on the natural history of New France. This kind of knowledge was not much attended to, by the first settlers of the British colonies and we' have but few of their ancient writings, in which it was contem plated at all. Obliged to depend upon transient and partial accounts, the best writer upon natural history, M. De Button, has fallen into many mis takes respecting the natural productions of A merica, which, more accurate observations would have corrected. The subject instead of being fully explored, is yet a treasure but little ex; amined. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from History of Vermont: Natural, Civil, and Statistical, in Three Parts, With a New Map of the State, and 200 Engravings For convenience in printing, the three several parts into which the work is divi ded, have been separately paged, and, to the two first parts, separate indices have been prepared. On account of the alphabetical arrangement of the third part, an index to that was thought to be unnecessary. DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from Appendix to the History of Vermont, Natural, Civil and Statistical, 1853 When the History of Vermont, to which this is an Appendix, was published, in 1842, the boundary line between the United States and the British provinces was um settled, and in dispute between the two governments but in the latter part of the summer of that year, the matter was ami eably arranged by a treaty, formed by Mr. Webster and Lord Ashburton, and ratified by the two governments. The northern boundary of the state was intended to be along the 45th parallel of latitude, and was supposed to be on that parallel till the sur. Vey of 1818 proved the 45th parallel to be some distance to the southward of what had been previously regarded as the northern boundary of the state, cutting off a strip through the whole width, varying from one-fourth of a mile to a few rods. By the treaty, the northern boundary of the state was established upon the old well known line, without reference to the 45th parallel. This line was marked in 1845, by cutting away the timber, where it passed through forests, and by putting up cast iron posts at short distances through its whole length. DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from Geography, History and Civil Government of Vermont This book has been prepared as a text book for schools. The work has been done with the conviction that while fullness is desirable, brevity is necessary. In the Geography an attempt has been made to exhibit Vermont in its relations to other portions Of the country, both contiguous and remote. TO that end, three maps were introduced. The first and second Of these show the position of the State with respect to some Of the great, routes of travel across the continent; while the third shows some commercial rela tions Of high importance to our industries, and equally it shows our relation to some of the chief centers of American civilization. The next four maps illustrate different phases of our Geography. The map entitled Political Divisions shows every town and gore in the State, the probate dis tricts, the counties, the congressional districts. The last map illustrates the history that follows. It is believed that this use of several maps has decided advantages over any larger maps that could be introduced in such a book. The description of the mountains and valleys and of the waters of the State is the result of considerable Observation and some reading; and it is believed to present the funda mental conceptions necessary to a clear understanding Of our Geography and History.
