Module I (NSRP 0541) and Module 2 (NSRP 0542) are designed to provide environmental awareness training to shipyard employees on various specific and general subjects ranging from air quality to hazardous waste management. The modules are divided into sessions called Good Environmental Practices (GEPs). The training package contains slides, instructor notes, and student handouts for each GEP training session. The training sessions are indexed into the following 8 directory files: General Air Water Hazardous Materials and Waste (Haz-Cord) Oil and Bulk Fuel Transfer (Oil-Tran) Department of Transportation Regulations for Hazardous Materials Transportation (DOT) Paint and Preventive Maintenance (PM). Module I focuses on introductory environmental practices that are universal in nature and appeal to a diverse classroom of shipyard crafts. Module I is contained in the directory labeled "General". The GEPs are intended to provide the basis or foundation of understanding about key environmental issues in the shipyard. On the other hand Module 2 Sessions are intended to reiterate reinforce and extend upon subjects encountered in Module I. Module 2 has a more comprehensive scope in that a larger number of subjects are discussed that potentially pertain to a wide variety of shipyard crafts.

National Shipbuilding Research Program Project N1-94-02, entitled Environmental Training Modules, consisted of the development of ten individual sets of training and presentation material specific for the shipbuilding and repair industry. The development of this training material was based upon a previous NSRP project (N1-91-1, Report #0366) entitled Master Plan for Environmental Education. This project identified the environmental training needs that currently existed within the shipbuilding and repair industry. On the basis of this needs assessment, ten training modules on various subjects were recommended for development. The Environmental Training Modules project is the implementation of these recommendations. National Steel & Shipbuilding Company (NASSCO) was the prime contractor to develop the training modules. Dana M. Austin Environmental Consulting, Inc. (ECI) (formerly Austin Environmental, Inc.) assisted in this development. The project was funded in two phases, with several training modules developed during each phase. Training was conducted at NASSCO using various training modules to obtain feedback for possible modifications to the training materials. Additionally, substantial modifications to the training materials, including module titles, were made at the recommendation of the project manager and the NSRP Facilities and Environmental Effects Panel (SP-1).

This project was sponsored by the Special Testing and Studies Committee ("Ad-Hoc") of the Environmental Technical Panel ("SP-1") to provide initial funding to develop an ongoing cooperative dialogue with senior national regional and state environmental agency personnel. The goal of this project is to provide the means to facilitate this dialogue in the most cost-effective manner. A secondary goal of this project is to provide the shipyards with a significant resource on technical environmental issues of concern. After approval off this project's original proposal the members of the Ad-Hoc committee requested that this project's scope of work be modified to more closely align itself with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Sustainable Industry Program's US Shipbuilding and Repair Industry Section project. This was accomplished by reformatting this project's Task Deliverables to correspond with the EPA's Sustainable Industry project goals. Additionally the EPA provided funding to expand the overall scope of the work to include specific Sustainable Industry project deliverables. This portion of the overall NSRP/EPA-SI project now consists to two Task Deliverables: I. Development of a comprehensive US Shipbuilding and Repair Industry Sector contact database: and 2. Performance and analysis of a Shipyard Environmental Issues of Concern survey. This report documents the results of these two tasks. Additional reports will be prepared and provide to the NSRP regarding the results of additional Tasks funded by the EPA-SI and other sources. The final collection of these reports will be considered to be the Final Project Report for both the NARP and EPA-SI.
