For the preconquest Maya, sexuality was a part of ritual discourse and performance, and all sex acts were understood in terms of their power to create, maintain, and destroy society. As postconquest Maya adapted to life under colonial rule, they neither fully abandoned these views nor completely adopted the formulation of sexuality prescribed by Spanish Catholicism. Instead, they evolved hybridized notions of sexual desire, represented in the figure of the Virgin Mary as a sexual goddess, whose sex acts embodied both creative and destructive components. This highly innovative book decodes the process through which this colonization of Yucatan Maya sexual desire occurred. Pete Sigal frames the discussion around a series of texts, including the Books of Chilam Balam and the Ritual of the Bacabs, that were written by seventeenth and eighteenth century Maya nobles to elucidate the history, religion, and philosophy of the Yucatecan Maya communities. Drawing on the insights of philology, discourse analysis, and deconstruction, he analyzes the sexual fantasies, fears, and desires that are presented, often unintentionally, in the "margins" of these texts and shows how they illuminate issues of colonialism, power, ritual, and gender.

Return to Virgin River with the books that started it all…The recipe for happiness: making it up as you go along Rising sous-chef Kelly Matlock’s sudden collapse at work is a wake-up call. Disillusioned and burned out, she’s retreated to her sister Jillian’s house in Virgin River to rest and reevaluate. Puttering in Jill’s garden and cooking with her heirloom vegetables is wonderful, but Virgin River is a far cry from San Francisco. Kelly’s starting to feel a little too unmotivated…until she meets Lief Holbrook. The handsome widower looks more like a lumberjack than a sophisticated screenwriter—a combination Kelly finds irresistible. But less appealing is Lief’s rebellious stepdaughter, Courtney. She’s the reason they moved from LA, but Courtney’s finding plenty of trouble even in Virgin River. Kelly’s never fallen for a guy with such serious baggage, but some things are worth fighting for. Besides, a bratty teenager can’t be any worse than a histrionic chef…right? Don't miss Robyn Carr's next uplifting novel, The Friendship Club, where four women come together at a tumultuous time in their lives, forging an unbreakable bond that will leave them all forever changed—available January 2024! This book is about the god who electrifies women. And the Dionysian charge that surfaces in the writings of Jungian analyst Linda Fierz-David, classicist Jane Ellen Harrison, and poet H. D. Although the scene of this work is the mystery chamber in Roman Pompeii, it really begins with the need to fathom a mystery of identity. Who were those analytical women who embraced Jung's depth psychology with their whole lives? Why did so many of them never marry? Where did their peculiar strength come from, and why did they choose to study what they chose to study? Nor Hall here uses the ten scenes of dramatic initiation to frame the experiences of death, maenadic madness, and change that occur to women in the midlife constellation of Dionysos, the Shaker and Loosener. Along the way, her meditation-rich with images from dreams, vase paintings, poetry, biographies-considers as well "housebound" women and other constraints, the gripping experience of childbirth, and relationships with the masculine, whatever its form. From a lauded poet and playwright, a novel of a young woman's life with the Black Panthers in 1960s San Francisco At first glance, Geniece’s story sounds like that of a typical young woman: she goes to college, has romantic entanglements, builds meaningful friendships, and juggles her schedule with a part-time job. However, she does all of these things in 1960s San Francisco while becoming a militant member of the Black Panther movement. When Huey Newton is jailed in October 1967 and the Panthers explode nationwide, Geniece enters the organization’s dark and dangerous world of guns, FBI agents, freewheeling sex, police repression, and fatal shoot-outs—all while balancing her other life as a college student. A moving tale of one young woman’s life spinning out of the typical and into the extraordinary during one of the most politically and racially charged eras in America, Virgin Soul will resonate with readers of Monica Ali and Ntozake Shange.

In Artemis: Virgin Goddess of the Hunt & Moon, Sorita d'Este offers a thorough scholarly examination of Artemis, a multifaceted deity venerated in antiquity not only as the goddess of the hunt and the moon but also as a powerful figure associated with childbirth, women, music, dance, and wild animals. This volume provides a comprehensive exploration of her vast influence and worship throughout the ancient world. Artemis, daughter of the Titaness Leto and the Olympian god Zeus, emerges as a significant and complex figure from birth, assisting her mother during the delivery of her twin brother, Apollo. Artemis held a unique place in Zeus' affections, receiving numerous gifts and privileges that elevated her status among the Olympian deities. Over the centuries, she assumed various roles, including Potnia Theron, the Huntress, and Mother Goddess. The latter role inspired her temple at Ephesus, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World and mentioned in the Bible. This major religious site saw Artemis worshipped by the Melissa Priestesses as a Mother Goddess rather than as the young huntress. This volume details the primary myths, powers, and cult practices surrounding Artemis, offering a study of her temples and sanctuaries, the festivals held in her honour, and her diverse roles in ancient mythology. The text delves into the animals sacred to her, her relationships with her virgin attendants and other gods and goddesses, and the myriad titles attributed to her, making it an essential resource for those seeking an understanding of this enduring goddess. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Second edition of the 2005 book by the same author, Artemis: Virgin Goddess of the Sun and Moon.
