The Missouri State Fair has represented the best of Missouri's agriculture and industry since its commencement in 1901. Developed during the Progressive Era, a time of social reform, its early exhibits reflected an interest in scientific agriculture as a means of improving rural life. School exhibits highlighted new attitudes about teaching. In 1921, Missouri celebrated its centennial at the state fair. Throughout the 1920s and 1930s, the fair encouraged good nutrition and medical care through its healthy baby contests. During World Wars I and II, it promoted patriotism with parades of military recruits. The grounds, originally 160 acres with 19 buildings, are now 396 acres with 124 buildings reflecting changing architectural styles.

For more than a century, state fairs have been one of the few places where farm families gather in large numbers to proudly display their animals, to celebrate familiar rituals, to be entertained or horrified by freak shows and circus performers, and to discover the wonders of new technologies. With over one hundred compelling images and a fascinating introduction, The Missouri State Fair provides a poignant look at that world--a world that has nearly disappeared from rural America. Richard Gaskell first visited the Missouri State Fair in 1968 while serving as a VISTA volunteer in Boonville, Missouri. Completely captivated, he vowed to return to the fair and photograph the people and events associated with it. Although it was not until 1986 that he was able to keep that promise, he has made the long trip from New England to Missouri every year since then to photograph sights that can be found only at the state fair, capturing dramatic images that say more than any written words could. In his introductory essay, Gaskell describes the fair's heritage--both historically and through interviews with the fair's contemporary participants. He also offers a personal reflection on the importance of the Missouri State Fair and its significance to the thousands of participants who have been attending year after year. His compelling and vivid images range from taut-muscled draft horses straining against their harnesses to belly dancers; from six year olds lost in thought with arms around their prizewinning sheep to the leathery faces of old-timers, keen-eyed yet wistful. In the expressions of the boys and girls and men and women who show their animals, Gaskell has masterfully captured all the promise, hope, and uncertainty that comes with participating in the diverse events at the Missouri State Fair. An air of innocence and freshness can be found in the faces of the children, while many of the adult faces reflect both the struggles and the gentleness associated with farm people. The Missouri State Fair chronicles more than a decade in the life of a historic American tradition. Through his evocative and compassionate portraits, Richard Gaskell provides a link between the state's rural past and its present, paying tribute to farmers and their animals--the real life and breath of a state fair's existence.

Are you a fan of Black Friday shopping? I'm not, but that didn't stop my wife from taking me with her on a journey with all the pushing, shoving, biting, screaming and kicking of the post-Thanksgiving rush. How about the Missouri State Fair? No time? Too far away? Too hot and humid? We will journey to the fair from the comfort of your home. Take in the sights and sounds of not only attending the fair, but partaking in it. There will be a little of everything: the attack of the giant wienie, sneaky underwear, memories of playing in pig dirt, and racing barrels... or is that barrel racing? We'll roll our trailer... clean over the guard rail, enter our roosters, Cocky-did-a-do-do and Breaking Wind, in the rooster crowing contest, and learn if there is such thing as chicken Viagra. We can go trout fishing at a state park. Who fell in? Do fish like minnows better if they are kept warm in your mouth? One thing is certain, we will have fun.

Randy Turk, along with his dog, Mo, spends sixteen months traveling the country in search of the rural America of his past: a time when Main Street was crowded, family and neighbors lived just down the road, and communities pulled together in times of need. In conversational interviews with 105 residents, Turk poses three guiding questions: Tell me about your town or community; tell me what it is like to live here; and tell me how it has changed. The participants include farmers, students, pilots, waitresses, artists, editors, volunteer firemen, politicians, museum curators, mayors, business owners, and retirees of every age, creed, and color. What binds them together is not only a belief in second chances but also the fact that they have all experienced life in a type of community that is rapidly vanishing. It is not gone yet, however. Small Town, USA is alive and well: different, perhaps, but surprisingly vital, just like its people. Randy Turk has found what he was looking for, and these are their stories.
