It is a tragic reality of life, which man cannot escape or run from. Every person inhabiting this planet has the good fortune of enjoying and sharing this environment on an even playing field. How we share and utilize this environment, is up to us. Despite our intelligence and the ability to rationalize logically, we adopt patterns of living, which result in our failure as human beings. Our failed existence, make us the victims of unpalatable, painful truths. We are the principal architects, who planned and designed the blue print for our undoing and downfall. The Mirror of Life presented its readers with vivid, graphic details of real life situations, in which victims faced ruin, disaster, pain, anguish, emotional turmoil and extreme remorse and regret. The inability of looking beyond your noses and assessing and evaluating future outcomes and consequences, accounted for much of the misery, disappointment and heart-ache. The misconception that money can buy you happiness and protect you from all adversities, was held up to ridicule and its false claim decimated, by the real-life stories presented by The Mirror. The mockery of this adage was paraded in shame, before its readers. Simple, common-sense living, uninfluenced by wealth or poverty, can protect and shield man against experiencing, the inevitable fate of coming face to face with such unpalatable, painful truths. Moderate and extreme lifestyles were juxtaposed to test the validity and outcome of choices available to mankind, in this Novella. Those who chose the extreme route were more vulnerable to pain and suffering. Those who embraced the moderate life style, while not totally free of such unpalatable, painful truths, were able to mitigate such consequences. They could, weather the storm and not drown in the cesspool of misery. These options are always available to mankind, but man’s inability to discern and make the right choices are questionable. Man’s indiscriminate and impulsive choices, account for the pain and sorrow, which he voluntarily accepts and drags alongside him, throughout his life.He alone can cut loose and break free from these self-imposed shackles. Love should never blind you to the reality staring you in the face.Seeing anomalies and denying their existence, can never be a sane solution and a recipe for healthy living. In our effort to shield and protect those we love, the truth is deliberately concealed. The irony is that those who protect and shield, are the ones most hurt by their caring, protective attitude. The greatest hurt and the most cruel cut emanates from man against man.Love and the expression of this emotion in its various manifestations, accounted for the severest pain and trauma to those dispensing it. Love, tempered with sobriety, can overcome the harsh backlash and accompanying misery. Love should be dispensed with controlled discretion. This golden rule should be observed, whether the recipient of this love is a child or an adult. The painful, unpalatable consequences of disregarding this golden rule, were clearly evident in the anecdotes, in which the characters Ben and Robin were presented by the Mirror of Life. Parading mischief and bad behavior as ‘cute,’ can be the worst parenting skill, which must be re-visited and revised. Man’s extreme, unchecked obsession, piloted by his insatiable greed and selfishness, can steer him into unchartered waters, from which there is no return. Even if he succeeds in escaping, he is scarred for life. The numerous real- life situations presented in this novella: The Mirror of Life: Unpalatable, Painful Truths Exposed, are a grim reminder to the discerning reader to live life with caution, avoiding the man-made traps and enticements, which can readily ensnare man. Thank you readers for your esteemed and highly respected company, in this edifying journey of self- discovery and redemption. May you never suffer the personal indignity of experiencing such unpalatable, painful truths o

Sit back, relax and go on a self-revealing memory trip, which will expose the folly and farcical lives, the most highly evolved species(man) exhibits to his own humiliation and personal degradation. This folly and weakness characterizes all of mankind, regardless of their place of residence and their ethnic origin. This revelation is akin to standing before a mirror and uttering in total disbelief: “ Is this how I am perceived by the outside world and more specifically, by my family and friends? Man has always prided himself as being irreproachable in matters of morality. There was a period in time, when a person kept his weakness, a closely guarded secret. He did not want to openly reveal his shortcomings to his family, friends or to the larger society. It was a social embarrassment, he was not willing to risk. His reputation and social standing in his home, amongst his friends, in his community and in society, was top on his priority list. In days gone by, the stain of social embarrassment could dog you for the rest of your life. No effort to erase this blemish by the offender, was considered worthy of being absolved. Society assumed the role of moral watch dogs, who growled menacingly at your smallest infraction. Returning home intoxicated was an unpardonable sin, especially to a home where family morals were treasures to be guarded and respected. Despite serious attempts by the transgressor to mask the offending stench of liquor, he was caught out and berated for breaking the family traditions and rules which were religiously executed for decades. The same censure and reproach were meted out to those who smoked. The patriarch in each family set out rules to be obeyed and carried out diligently by each member of the family. These rules were verbal in nature, but its adherence was written in stone. Those who defied or attempted to flout these rules, experienced the full wrath and disdain of all members of the family. All forms of social misdemeanor were viewed with disdain and contempt. The church and all religious institutions selected appropriate verses from their holy scriptures and delivered sermons to their congregations, damning these practices, which were destroying the social fabric of societies, leaving them morally tattered. Indulgences in all shapes and forms were not tolerated. Throughout the history of man, these deviant behaviors and transgressions in man were criticized and condemned. Has history taught us anything? There have been instances of genuine repentance and remorse from offenders. However, the weak and unprincipled individuals, reverted to their old ways and faced dire consequences. They were ostracized and became pariahs in their own families. How times have changed ! The old treasured values have become yesterday’s garbage, relegated to the sidewalk, awaiting the arrival and pick-up of the Waste-Management Truck. Cherished family values, once the hall mark and cornerstone of each family, have rapidly crumbled and are facing extinction from the invasion of uncensored and unstoppable modern ideologies ... the New Age Philosophy. Exercising freedom of speech/expression has taken on a totally new meaning. The once, moral public guardian, the Censor Board, has become toothless and ineffective. With the proliferation of X-Rated material and their easy availability to everyone via movie houses, the internet and now in unsupervised vending machines, one wonders how this form of obscenity, passed the scrutiny of the Censor Board ? The Censor Board needs a serious overhaul. It might be a good idea to create another body, that would oversee the decisions taken by the Censor Board, before the helpless public is bombarded with, yet another installment of obscene thrash. Vulgarity and immorality characterize to

Blackface minstrelsy, the nineteenth-century performance practice in which ideas and images of blackness were constructed and theatricalized by and for whites, continues to permeate contemporary popular music and its audience. Harriet J. Manning argues that this legacy is nowhere more evident than with Michael Jackson in whom minstrelsy’s gestures and tropes are embedded. During the nineteenth century, blackface minstrelsy held together a multitude of meanings and when black entertainers took to the stage this complexity was compounded: minstrelsy became an arena in which black stereotypes were at once enforced and critiqued. This body of contradiction behind the blackface mask provides an effective approach to try and understand Jackson, a cultural figure about whom more questions than answers have been generated. Symbolized by his own whiteface mask, Jackson was at once ‘raced’ and raceless and this ambiguity allowed him to serve a whole host of others’ needs - a function of the mask that has run long and deep through its tortuous history. Indeed, Manning argues that minstrelsy’s assumptions and uses have been fundamental to the troubles and controversies with which Jackson was beset.
