DOWNLOAD EBOOKEvery thirty years or so Methodists publish a new hymnal. The new United Methodist Hymnal (1989) is the latest in a long line of "official" American hymnal dating back to the first one in 1784. Not all were popular, especially the first. Although the Christmas Conference in 1784 adopted Wesley's Collection of Psalms and Hymns for the Lord's Day, along with his modest revision of the Book of Common Prayer as standards for public worship in the new church, both quickly fell into disuse. Neither matched the informal style of worship American Methodist favored for their chapels and camp meetings. The new church preferred the smaller, already popular "pocket hymn-books" whose "spiritual songs" mixed Wesleyan doctrine with evangelical fervor. Six years later (1790) the two bishops, Asbury and Coke, openly recommended A Pocket Hymn-Book Designed as a Constant Companion for the Pious, Collected from Various Authors and asked the denomination's newly formed published house to rush it into print.
