Matrix Games are an established way of running seminar type narrative games in the professional environment. This handbook is the most comprehensive set of papers to date on their use in education, training, research and innovation. The book starts by exploring the origins of Matrix Games, with contributions on the development of the method. It includes a sample game about NATO and Russian posturing on the Baltic Sea. Many wargames explore war in this contested area of sea, but a Matrix Game is used to explore a conflict short of kinetic. In the theory section, some of the underpinning philosophy of Matrix Games is outlined by Chris Engle, the inventor of the method. Education has applied Matrix Games in teaching. This section includes examples from around the world from language training to military education. The final section outlines operational analysis problems, innovation and using a Matrix Game to explore contemporary conflict by Professor Rex Brynen.

This is the second of three volumes surveying the state of the art in Game Theory and its applications to many and varied fields, in particular to economics. The chapters in the present volume are contributed by outstanding authorities, and provide comprehensive coverage and precise statements of the main results in each area. The applications include empirical evidence. The following topics are covered: communication and correlated equilibria, coalitional games and coalition structures, utility and subjective probability, common knowledge, bargaining, zero-sum games, differential games, and applications of game theory to signalling, moral hazard, search, evolutionary biology, international relations, voting procedures, social choice, public economics, politics, and cost allocation. This handbook will be of interest to scholars in economics, political science, psychology, mathematics and biology. The contents of this book comprise an appropriate background to start working and doing research on mean-field-type control and game theory. To make the exposition and explanation even easier, we first study the deterministic optimal control and differential linear-quadratic games. Then, we progressively add complexity step-by-step and little-by-little to the problem settings until we finally study and analyze mean-field-type control and game problems incorporating several stochastic processes, e.g., Brownian motions, Poisson jumps, and random coefficients. We go beyond the Nash equilibrium, which provides a solution for non- cooperative games, by analyzing other game-theoretical concepts such as the Berge, Stackelberg, adversarial/robust, and co-opetitive equilibria. For the mean-field-type game analysis, we provide several numerical examples using a Matlab-based user-friendly toolbox that is available for the free use to the readers of this book. We present several engineering applications in both continuous and discrete time. Among these applications we find the following: water distribution systems, micro-grid energy storage, stirred tank reactor, mechanism design for evolutionary dynamics, multi-level building evacuation problem, and the COVID-19 propagation control. Julian Barreiro-Gomez Hamidou Tembine With such a demand from engineering audiences, this book is very timely and provides a thorough study of mean-field-type game theory. The strenuous protagonist of this book is to bridge between the theoretical findings and engineering solutions. The book introduces the basics first, and then mathematical frameworks are elaborately explained. The engineering application examples are shown in detail, and the popular learning approaches are also investigated. Those advantageous characteristics will make this book a comprehensive handbook of many engineering fields for many years, and I will buy one when it gets published. Zhu Han

Cyber security is one of the big challenges of the 21st century. Failure to meet the threat can have major consequences for the individual, a company, an NGO or a nation state. Cyber wargames are an essential part of the training cycle, education and operational analysis needed to rise to meet this threat. This handbook aims to fill a gap in the training for cyber-attacks and cyber warfare. By providing worked examples of different types of manual cyber wargame, including aims and objectives for each. Cyber wargaming combines two complex fields: wargame design and cyber operations. It has examples of: Network attack and defence exercises Committee games Company and state level games The Battle to Dominate the Information Space Attack Chain modelling The book is full of additional information for the reader, such as how a cyber conflict might develop or what the key decisions C-Suite leaders need to consider when faced by a sustained cyber attack.

Understanding the potential synergies between computer simulation and wargaming Based on the insights of experts in both domains, Simulation and Wargaming comprehensively explores the intersection between computer simulation and wargaming. This book shows how the practice of wargaming can be augmented and provide more detail-oriented insights using computer simulation, particularly as the complexity of military operations and the need for computational decision aids increases. The distinguished authors have hit upon two practical areas that have tremendous applications to share with one another but do not seem to be aware of that fact. The book includes insights into: The application of the data-driven speed inherent to computer simulation to wargames The application of the insight and analysis gained from wargames to computer simulation The areas of concern raised by the combination of these two disparate yet related fields New research and application opportunities emerging from the intersection Addressing professionals in the wargaming, modeling, and simulation industries, as well as decision makers and organizational leaders involved with wargaming and simulation, Simulation and Wargaming offers a multifaceted and insightful read and provides the foundation for future interdisciplinary progress in both domains.
