Excerpt from The Lion's Brood It is much worn, - this denarius, - and the lines are softened and blurred, - as of right they should be, when you think that more than two thousand years have passed since it felt the die. It is lying before me now on my table, and my eyes rest dreamily on its helmeted head of Pallas Nicephora. There, behind her, is the mint-mark and that word of ancient power and glory, "Roma." Below are letters so worn and indistinct that I must bend close to read them: "- M. Sergi," and then others that I cannot trace. Excerpt from The Death of the Lion I had simply, I suppose, a change of heart, and it must have begun when I received my manuscript back from Mr. Pinhorn. Mr. Pinhorn was my "chief," as he was called in the office: he had accepted the high mission of bringing the paper up. This was a weekly periodical, which had been supposed to be almost past redemption when he took hold of it. It was Mr. Deedy who had let the thing down so dreadfully: he was never mentioned in the office now save in connexion with that misdemeanour. Young as I was I had been in a manner taken over from Mr. Deedy, who had been owner as well as editor; forming part of a promiscuous lot, mainly plant and office-furniture, which poor Mrs. Deedy, in her bereavement and depression, parted with at a rough valuation. I could account for my continuity but on the supposition that I had been cheap. I rather resented the practice of fathering all flatness on my late protector, who was in his unhonoured grave; but as I had my way to make I found matter enough for complacency in being on a "staff." 'The Lion's Brood' is a novel written by Duffield Osborne. The story unfolds by introducing us to the narrator, who is describing an old denarius coin. It has a helmeted head of Pallas Nicephora on one side and a horseman on the other. The narrator wonders if they will be able to see something new if they keep looking at the clouds with the coin in front of them. They make a vow to the goddess Pallas if she grants them this ability.

Excerpt from The Lions of the Lord: A Tale of the Old West Of these seven historic highways the one richest in story is the old Salt Lake Trail: this because at its western end was woven a romance within a romance; a drama of human passions, of love and hate, of high faith and low, of the beautiful and the ugly, of truth and lies; yet with certain fine fidelities under it all; a drama so close-knit, so amazingly true, that one who had lightly designed to make a tale there was dismayed by fact. So much more thrilling was it than any fiction he might have imagined, so more than human had been the cunning of the Master Dramatist, that the little make-believe he was ponder ing seemed clumsy and poor, and he turned from it to try to tell what had really been. Excerpt from The Lesson of the Master: The Death of the Lion; The Next Time, and Other Tales I was invited, and all urgently, to contribute to the first number, and was regaled with the golden truth that my composition might absolutely assume, might shamelessly parade in, its own organic form. It was disclosed to me, wonderfully, that - so golden the air pervading the enterprise - any projected contribution might conform, not only unchallenged but by this circumstance itself the more esteemed, to its true intelligible nature. For any idea I might wish to express I might have space, in other words. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
