DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from The Life and Works of Sir Henry Mainwaring, Vol. 1 The historian who sets himself the task of writing about the Elizabethan navy must inevitably centre his labours round the foremost of its seamen, Sir Francis Drake, and in like manner the naval history of the first two Stuarts can be written round the life of Sir Henry Mainwaring. In some respects Mainwaring was no unworthy successor of the Elizabethan hero, though owing to the fact that he did not take to the sea until after the peace with Spain, the same opportunities of glory and distinction did not present themselves. To this may be attributed the circumstance of his name having barely escaped oblivion, for no account of him is to be found in the Dictionary of National Biography. Had he been born a generation earlier he would have probably filled such another page in history as his brilliant compatriot.
