Written with the participation of Lieber's wife, this biography is a compilation of excerpts from Lieber's letters and journals with connecting biographical sections by Perry. Though it was superseded by Frank Freidel's Francis Lieber, Nineteenth-Century Liberal, which is available as a Lawbook Exchange reprint, Perry's study retains certain advantages. In addition to its input from Lieber's widow the book reprints excerpts from Lieber's journals and letters that are not available elsewhere. Born and educated in Germany, Francis Lieber [1798-1872] was an important political philosopher and educator who helped to establish the study of political science in the United States. His works on civil liberty, military law and political ethics remain influential.

Excerpt from The Life and Letters of Francis Lieber For a long time Germany has paid a high price for her military supremacy and her somewhat rigid system of government, by the constant drain that emigration to this country has made upon her population. During the last sixty years, no less than three million Germans have reached these shores, most of whom have made themselves homes where it was possible to enjoy immunity from some Of the discomforts which. They felt in their own land. Among these immigrants, who have formed a very valuable part of the population of the United States, have been many political exiles, who have been the special Object of the despotic measures that have occasionally threatened to stifle the national life of Germany during the present cen tury and it is impossible to overlook the almost infallible accuracy with which the German police put their hand on those young men who, under different circumstances, have shown themselves able to shed glory on the land of their adoption, as well as on that Of their birth. Excerpt from The Life and Letters of Francis Lieber This volume contains extracts from the Diary and the copious correspondence of the late Dr. Francis Lieber, with such additional information as was necessary concerning his early years. Fortunately the greater part of his life was told by his own pen, and'the incidents of his later years were so few in number that they may be gathered from his letters. These were many in number, and the reader will see how varied were the subjects which attracted Lieber's attention. His zeal for the great questions of civic duty is familiar to those who have studied his books. Dr. D. C. Gilman, the accomplished president of Johns Hopkins University, has collected in two volumes the most important of Lieber's miscellaneous writings. This book, it is hoped, will complete the picture of the man. Doctor Lieber's widow had faithfully preserved every memorial of her distinguished husband, and the task of the editor has been almost entirely one of selection from a vast mass of material. A Sea of Love presents 95 letters exchanged between Hamburg and Antebellum USA by the famous Berlin born scholar, encyclopedist, and knowledge broker Francis Lieber (1798-1872) and his wife, Hamburg born Mathilde in 1839-1845. Their letters offer rare insights in the privacy of marriage and family life, self perceptions, notions of surroundings, as well as mental settings of the spouses. Beyond genuine individual phenomena of their Atlantic emotions their epistles show ways and methods of international communication and networking. Their writings reflect general notions and ideas shared by well-educated citizens of an Atlantic Republic of Letters connected by culture, interests, and emotions.

Beginning with a summary of Francis Lieber's life, this book demonstrates that the man who introduced the study of hermeneutics to the United States, applying it to practical reason, deserves an important place in the history of American hermeneutics. Catalano examines Lieber's application to practical reason, in addition to the current state of hermeneutics in both Germany and the United States. This book is indispensable to philosophers, especially those focusing on the history of U.S. philosophy.
