Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 67: October 12, 1905 In all the useful and philanthropic enterprises thus enumerated, and in many more that cannot now be named, it was virtually the Church that took the lead; for Brigham Young, as President and trustee-in-trust, acted as the agent of the Church in investing its means and manipulating its revenues. In this capacity he built the Deseret Telegraph line, entirely with home capi tal and home labor, only a few years after the original telegraph line crossed the continent, and before the advent of the railroad. He and other leading Mormons helped to construct the Union Pacific and Central Pacific rail roads, which on May 10, 1869, made Promontory, Utah, their place of meeting and welding point between East and West. About this time also he took the initiative in organizing Zion's Co-operative Mercantile Institution, a mam moth concern designed to unify Mormon commercial interests in the face of impending fierce competition from the outside, resulting from the coming of the railroad. He even attempted to re-establish the United Order, and succeeded in part; though his greatest success in that direction was limited to the mighty Cc-operative movement of which he was the chief instigator and promoter. Excerpt from Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 12 I. - Paul, I think, talks about four foundation principles in some of his writings, viz., repentance, faith, baptism, and laying on of hands. This order of Paul was not wise enough for modern doctors, and therefore they mend it into sprinkling, faith, repentance - no laying on of hands for the Holy Ghost - and your sect, out of these four principles rejects baptism for the remission of sin, and laying on of hands for the Holy Ghost. Thus out of Paul's four principles, modern wise doc tors reject two. Is this so? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 87: February 12, 1925 I have chosen this particular passage from many others which bear upon the same subject and have submitted these comments to emphasise one of the greatest impelling powers behind the great missionary movement of the Church of Christ, viz. To announce to all the world that Jesus Christ has again delegated the same authority to men, which He gave to His former apostles, and has once more established His Church upon earth. As the Saviour authoritatively commissioned His apostles of old, so has He authoritatively commissioned men to-(lay. Missionaries are abroad declaring this wonderful message. Equal to this as an impelling force is the Church membership's realisation of the transforming power of the Gospel. Every true member knows that obedience to the Gospel brings to individuals new motives, new ideals, new assurance that it will produce ideal conditions in society and bring to each nation that new life and love of service which will eventually establish the long-hoped-for peace and good w ill. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 92: June 12, 1930 While the M. I. A. Invites the middle-aged and even the aged to enroll as members, an invitation which is accepted by many, its mission primarily is with those boys and girls and young men and women who are passing through the most critical period of their lives. Its aim is to secure to its members in their youth a conscious testimony of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, by the develop ment and exercise of the gift of God within them, bestowed upon them in their childhood by the laying on of hands of the Priest hood; and so prepare and, in a measure, qualify them for the missions they are expected to perform.
