Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 100: September 15, 1938 HE members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints reverently believe in the Divinity of Christ and that through Him only can the world be saved from sin. We believe that He died to redeem mankind and that because of Him we may confidently expect a future life through the resurrection. In the mission of Jesus, we have an instance of a divine being assuming the form of a man and actually passing through the natural stages of birth, childhood, manhood and death. In this, He subjected Himself to the physical limitation of humanity - He became weary; He was an hungered; He needed sleep; He suffered physical pain. And He did this as He. So often said, in order to manifest the Father to whomsoever the Father might designate. And for what purpose? And this is life eternal, that they might know thee, the only true God and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent. There are not many who are original in their thoughts or actions; not many are discoverers or inventors. The vast majority are imitators. In order to advance, one must have in mind and wish to reach an ideal beyond his present condi tion. Take the case of a child. He hears his mother speak; he tries to speak. He sees other people walk; he tries to walk. When he becomes older he sees things other people possess and naturally longsto possess them. The child soon looks up to his parents and comes to consider them the embodiment of goodness and wisdom. To every child born into the world, father and mother are the first and best representatives of the purpose which is in the heart of God. Whom the child loves he wishes to resemble. If he admires and loves his parents he will copy after them and they will become his ideal and to a great extent shape his destiny; as he grows and develops in years he is slowly and gradually raised towards the level of his ideal. But soon he begins to observe other people and the time comes when the parents' influence over him is not so complete and he begins to admire others and slowly but surely to copy after them. He referred to the statement that what the world needs to-day is the gospel of Jesus Christ, and said it is a comforting thought to know that the gospel is on the earth and the world is getting its benefits. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 72: June 30, 1910 Of all the new religions of the nineteenth century, not one has caused so much comment as that called Mormonism. Its influence and development were so marked and the work of Joseph Smith, its founder, so marvelous, that an historical writer of the time, Josiah Quincy, a few weeks after Joseph Smith's martyrdom, wrote. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 95: May 4, 1933 There are a great many men and women, in fact, the great majority of all the people in the world, believe that Joseph Smith was a false prophet. When you contemplate the fact that this revelation was given a little over one hundred years ago, and that it is recognized as scientifically true to-day, after investiga tions have been made by great scientific minds, it is remarkable that a young man should be able to give something so marvel lous as this Word of Wisdom. So as a tribute to the prophet who gave it, who was and is and ever will be a prophet of the living God, I shall read it. All the disbelief of the world will never change that fact, because it is a fact. All the disbelief of the world cannot change the fact that this man was chosen of God and became the head of the Church of Jesus Christ, the Saviour of the world. Disbelief does not change facts. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 77: December 30, 1915 Such is the Word of the Lord, in all ages, regarding the king dom of God which will be established at the second coming of the Son of Man. It tells us that it will be a kingdom in which peace, founded upon righteousness, will prevail. There will be peace and joy in the hearts of men, instead of stormy passions, doubt, anxiety, and despair; there will be peace between neighbors, and in all industrial fields, instead of rivalry, envy, strikes and lock outs; there will be peace in the government, because party strife will be a thing of the past; there will be international peace, instead of war and bloodshed, because perfect justice will be the basis of all international relations. Many people refuse to believe the word of God on this subject. Wars, they say, have always been and always will be. They say they believe God will save His children and transfer them to the realms of the glorified, where there shall be no more strife, and no suffering of any kind, but they refuse to believe that God can save and redeem His children on this earth. They pray for the coming of the kingdom in which His will shall be done on earth as it is in heaven, but they do not believe that the prayer can be realized on earth. And yet, what God has spoken has never failed. His promises, as far as they have become due, have been kept to the very letter, and those that are still reserved for the future will be kept with equal faithfulness. We have, as Peter says, the word of prophecy more sure even than the word of history which has been transmitted to us by the eye-witnesses of the power and majesty of our Lord while in the flesh (ii. Peter 1: 15 The kingdom of righteousness and peace will be established in the fulness of time, according to the pro phetic word, and the immediate preparations for it have been going on for some time. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has been raised up in the valleys of the mountains. As we read in Isaiah, Zion that bringeth good tidings, or, rather, he that bringeth good tidings to Zion, has appeared in the high mountains; he that bringeth good tidings to Jerusalem has lifted up his voice with strength and proclaimed the coming of the Lord (isa. 40: the mighty angel with the little book Open has appeared and solemnly declared that there shall be time, or delay, no longer, but that the hour has come for the completion of God's plan of redemption (rev. 10: 1 And, in accordance with these declara tions the political structures of the world are to-day shaking and trembling, for the ground is to be cleared for the coming of the Lord of lords, the King of kings. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 74: January 18, 1912 Brother Taylor has given me some credit here, in his remarks, that I do not claim to merit, referring to a condition of which I cannot of myself boast; for I am under the necessity of acknow ledging, and I do most cheerfully acknowledge, that I owe my success so far in family life largely to those whom God has favored me with to help me care for and rear and train my children. For years together, I have been away from home on missions, leaving my little ones with their mothers; and yet, during all my absence from home, I have felt the assurance in my soul that my boys and girls were under the care, protection and guidance of faithful, true Latter-day Saints. Whatever credit may attach to me, is due largely to those whom God has given me to be my helpmates in life. I want to acknowledge it before the world, because it is true. I do not mean to say, by this, that we are without blemish, that we are perfect, that we know it all, and that we, ourselves, know just what to do and how to do it, in order to accomplish the results that we desire; but I mean to say this, that in the home where there is union, where there is love, where there is faith in God, where the father and the mother, when together, and the children are united in prayer and in sup plication to God - that there is a providence over that home that will shape the course of those that are entrusted with the training and care of that home, that will be most pleasing and acceptable in the sight of God. We must, therefore, give not only credit to our wives for their faithfulness and love of the truth, for the important part they act, for the good work they do in the sacred duty of rearing the family, and their union with their husbands in the family discipline; but we must acknowledge, where this spirit and union prevails in the hearts of the family, that the hand of God is there, and the providence of the Lord is over them and their home, and blessings will come and the right spirit and feeling will be inspired within the hearts of our children.
