Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 73: November 2, 1911 He was quick to discern and appreciate the' good qualities of others, and was ever thoughtful regarding their welfare. He pos sessed the same good qualities of heart as of mind, and was liberal to an extreme for the views of others and those with whom he might differ in opinion, religiously or otherwise. By his continual upright course in life he established a credit for integrity and honesty. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 65: August, 1903 On the way to the hotel We were surprised and interested by a custom that has since grown very familiar to us. Our cabman was evidently religious (though he did not scruple at demanding over twice the agreed and regular price at the end of the drive), and whenever he passed a church or shrine in the street he took off his strange-looking hat with his left hand, and made the sign of the cross with the right by touching his forehead, lower part of chest and shoulders. The falling rain did not deter him. Naturally this is an awkward thing for drivers to do, and many times they drop their reins for the moment while they attend to their worship. A curious coincidence at the hotel was that President Lyman found, shortly after becoming located, that in the adjoining room on one side Elder John F. Home was living and on the other Elder Kenneth Crismon had taken up his abode. These Elders from Germany had attended the dedication services at Christiania, and later visited Stockholm, thence sailing to St. Petersburg. Religious conditions among the Russians are naturally the most interesting subject to us, and to learn these was one of 'the motives President Lyman had for making the journey. There are many and conflicting currents of religion here; many that are deep and hidden which are not learned or understood without intimate association with the people. But in few places is it possible to see and at least partly understand the religion of the great majority. We went into the Kasan cathedral soon after arriving, and there saw a scene of most active worship. Russian churches have no seats, and there is room for the devotee to kneel or prostrate himself if he wishes. People of all classes were there. Beggars in their rags (their purpose being to obtain charity), the lame, the halt, the blind, laboring people, richly clad men and women, officers of the army, all kissed the same icons, made the cross and bowed before the images, and in some cases kneeled and touched their foreheads to the floor. One poor fellow, evidently with a heavy weight on his conscience, we noticed when we entered, making the cross, kneeling, bowing to the floor and rising again only to repeat the movements. During the whole time we were there he continued. The only thing to break the monotony of it was that some times he remained down for a few moments and smote his breast with his hand. The churches are open all day and the people come in and usually go out after a few moments' worship. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 81: July 24, 1919 Long and earnestly the great leader gazes upon the scene, while the members of the little company await breathlessly the verdict. Then, relaxing his hold upon the shoulders of his supporters. He utters the memorable words: This is the Place! Drive on. This is the Place! The place for what? What objective had led this little company of toil-worn men and women to sacrifice the gentler customs and comforts of civilization, to wend their way out into the heart of the Great American Desert? Ah! It was the witness in their souls that God was about to perform a mar velons work and a wonder. His kingdom was about to come to earth, and it was here, here in the midst of desolations, that the nucleus of His work was to be laid! This had been the warp and the woof of their dreams by night, and the vision that glowed before their spiritual eyes by day, throughout all the long, weary march, characterized by so much physical pain and suffering. This the vision that prompted them to'new effort when physical strength hung in the balance! The overwhelming conviction that God had not forgotten His people, nor His prophets; the inspira tion of which had heartened them time and time again, while on the pilgrimage, to take up the strains of: Come, come, ye saints. No toil nor labor fear - all is well! All is well! For this, like those of old, they took gladly the Spoiling of their goods, dispossession, exile far from the madding crowd, that they might have the privi lege of worshiping God as their souls desired, and that they might secure for themselves a place of refuge in which to begin the great latter-day work of preparation for the coming of the Great King. And so, down into the valley bottom they wended their way. And there, before the sun had yet declined beyond the western hills, they had already begun the establishment of a civilization in the heart of those vast solitudes. The voice of God had said, through the inspiration of the prophets of old: It shall come to pass in the last days that the mountain of the Lord's house shall be established in the tops of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills, and all nations Shall flow unto it. A house must be builded, then, to the Lord, so that the Christ should not again have it to say that the foxes have holes, and the birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man hath not where to lay His head. On April 6th, 1853, just five years from the time of their entrance into the valley, and while yet the people labored in dire poverty, the foundation stones of the temple of God were laid. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 74: July 18, 1912 The kingdom of God and His righteousness was the sole thought of the noble men and women who laid the foundation of this great commonwealth. Of them they spoke and sang by day, of them they dreamed by night. Hear the words of their faithful leader as soon as his feet had touched the soil, Here we shall build a city, and there shall stand the temple of our God. We point with pride to the fulfillment of that prophecy. It is evidence to us, if not to the unthinking world, that the leader of the pioneers was inspired by the Spirit of the living God. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 74: January 18, 1912 Brother Taylor has given me some credit here, in his remarks, that I do not claim to merit, referring to a condition of which I cannot of myself boast; for I am under the necessity of acknow ledging, and I do most cheerfully acknowledge, that I owe my success so far in family life largely to those whom God has favored me with to help me care for and rear and train my children. For years together, I have been away from home on missions, leaving my little ones with their mothers; and yet, during all my absence from home, I have felt the assurance in my soul that my boys and girls were under the care, protection and guidance of faithful, true Latter-day Saints. Whatever credit may attach to me, is due largely to those whom God has given me to be my helpmates in life. I want to acknowledge it before the world, because it is true. I do not mean to say, by this, that we are without blemish, that we are perfect, that we know it all, and that we, ourselves, know just what to do and how to do it, in order to accomplish the results that we desire; but I mean to say this, that in the home where there is union, where there is love, where there is faith in God, where the father and the mother, when together, and the children are united in prayer and in sup plication to God - that there is a providence over that home that will shape the course of those that are entrusted with the training and care of that home, that will be most pleasing and acceptable in the sight of God. We must, therefore, give not only credit to our wives for their faithfulness and love of the truth, for the important part they act, for the good work they do in the sacred duty of rearing the family, and their union with their husbands in the family discipline; but we must acknowledge, where this spirit and union prevails in the hearts of the family, that the hand of God is there, and the providence of the Lord is over them and their home, and blessings will come and the right spirit and feeling will be inspired within the hearts of our children. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 74: December 5, 1912 I wish to call the attention of the despisers of new revelation to the words of Christ, spoken to His disciples on one occasion when treating on the subject of prayer. They are as follows: And I say unto you, Ask, and it Shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 74: November 28, 1912 Upon it let the clouds distil virtue and richness and let the fields smile with plenty. Let the flocks and herds greatly multiply upon the mountains and hills. Let thy great kindness conquer and sub due the unbelief of Thy people, incline them to gather in upon this land according to Thy word. Let the large Ships of nations bring them from the distant isles, etc. Oh, the meaning of that prayer and the humility of the Divinely called man who uttered it! That prayer is recorded in heaven, as well as upon earth, as shown by its fulfillment before the eyes of all nations. That prayer answers every question that can arise concerning the gathering of Judah in this day. It stands as another witness to all the world of the truth of the restored gos pel of Jesus Christ and the Divine commission that rests upon the leaders of God's Church, to which the world in derision gives the name of Mormonism. Despite present unpopularity and persecution, the world will some day come to realize that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has been God's instrument for the fulfillment of His purposes in these latter days. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 74: March 7, 1912 N ow, I will be talking if I do not quit pretty soon. But I rejoice that I have this privilege, for the sake of my brother Budger - to mention his name here, for he and I have been almost like twin brothers. We have been devoted and true to each other, as all our council are. And I regret that he could not be here. I received a very splendid letter within the week from Brother Clawson, two pages of closely-written matter. I presume that his heart will be like mine would be in regard to the loss of my mother and my father, if I could not have been with them, to acknowledge the hand of the Lord, for she has lived out her days, and has not died until her time came. It came, and she was fully ripe for this change, and there was not any death in it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
