Excerpt from The Lancashire Library As a rule Tracts and Pamphlets printed since I 720 are excluded, because after that date their number is so great (and many of them so perfectly valueless), that to have included them would have defeated the object in view. As a book of this kind is essentially a work of reference, every care has been taken, by means of alphabetical and chronological arrangement, as well as by the addition of copious Indices, to render its contents accessible with the least possible trouble. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. Excerpt from The Old Church and School Libraries of Lancashire Any other information you may be able to give me bearing on the matter will be gratefully received and duly acknowledged. Somewhat over one hundred and thirty of these circular letters were sent out, and I received answers from eighty eight incumbents, to all of whom I tender my thanks for the information afforded, even though in the great majority of cases the information was that no library either existed or had ever done so. Some few incum bents informed me personally that there were no libra ries in their parishes, but about forty did not think fit to reply to my circular, although in every case an envelope stamped and addressed was enclosed. In the case of some of these forty parishes I made further enquiries, but in the case of others it is not impossible that traces of a library may yet be found. All the Masters of Grammar Schools to Whom I have applied have very courteously replied to my letters, and from many of them. Excerpt from Our Kid: With Other London and Lancashire Sketches All these sketches may claim to be true, for there is not an action recorded, hardly a phrase repeated, in any one of them which is not taken from life. Yet all are fiction, for the characters are not photographs bat composite pictures with traits from more than one original in each. Old friends and fellow-workers will recognize familiar scenes and the echoes of old battles. I hope they will feel no inclination to charge me with having dealt hardly with old Mission friends now long dead, or with haying "set down aught in malice." My thanks are due to the Editor of the Manchester Guardian for permission to republish the sketches, which appeared in his columns. Excerpt from Lancashire Illustrated: From Original Drawings The Tower of St. Nicholas, surmounted by its very elegant lantern, occupies the centre of the back-ground; and on the right hand, the Dome of the Town-hall supports a Statue of Britannia, looking down with complacency on her industrious sons. Excerpt from Ballads Songs of Lancashire: Ancient and Modern Of these older ballads very few exist of an earlier date than the reign of James I., when [some remnants] were first collected in [small chap-books] termed Garlands, of which many are preserved in the Pepysian Library. In Percy's Rdiquaf we find a few more of these compositions, and Mr. Halliwell has included some others, both in his Palatine Antlzology, in his Palalinc Garland, and in the thirty-two folio volumes of sheet-songs, ballads, etc., presented by him to the Chetham Library, Manchester.
