DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from The Iron Ores of Lake Superior: Containing Some Facts of Interest Relating to Mining and Shipping of the Ore and Location of Principal Mines, With Original Maps of the Ranges Much of the information contained in this book has appeared in the various trade journals, geological reports, and scientific society transactions. Such widely scattered information, however, is of little practical use and our idea in presenting this book is that a compilation of such scattered facts would be appreciated by those interested in Lake Superior Ores. In addition to this, we have secured the latest descriptions of most of the mines on the different ranges, and have worked out maps showing their exact location. We are indebted to the various mine owners and ore sales agents for giving freely the information sought. We shall be grateful for any criticisms, either as to statements or statistics, in which we may be in error, that such mistakes may be corrected in future editions of the book. DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe availability of inexpensive steel, so crucial to the United States' emergence as a leading industrial power in the late nineteenth century, relied upon the rise of an ore transport system on the Great Lakes that would feed American industry as a whole and come to alter the face of the region. This detailed history recounts innovations in shipping, the improvement of channels and harbors, the creation of locks, technical advances in loading and unloading equipment, and the ability to attract capital and government support to fund the various projects. When government support was lacking, reinterpretations of the Constitution were introduced to justify federal involvement. These changes, which often functioned symbiotically, represent one of the key untold stories in the spectacular rise of American industry.
