The popularization of the Internet, due in larger part to the advent of multifunctional cell phones, poses new challenges for health professionals, patients, and caregivers as well as creates new possibilities for all of us. This comprehensive volume analyzes how this social phenomenon is transforming long-established healthcare practices and perceptions in a country with one of the highest numbers of Internet users: Brazil. After an opening text that analyzes the Internet and E-Health Care as a field of study, the book comprises six parts. The first part introduces the emergence and development of the internet in Brazil, its pioneering experience in internet governance, digital inclusion, and online citizen participation. The second part is dedicated to internet health audiences by analyzing the cases of patients, the young, and the elderly seeking and sharing health information online, especially in virtual communities. The third part is dedicated to the challenges that the expansion of the internet in healthcare poses to all of us, such as the evaluation of the quality of health information available online and the prevention of the risks involved with online sales, cyberbullying, and consumption of prescription medicines. The fourth presents some innovative e-learning experiences carried out with different groups in Brazil, while the fifth part analyses some practical applications involving the Internet and health, including studies on M-Health, the Internet of things, serious games and the use of new information and communication technologies in health promotion. The last chapter analyses the future of healthcare in the Internet Age. The authors establish a critical and creative debate with international scholarship on the subject. This book is written in a direct and comprehensible way for professionals, researchers, students of communication and health, as well as for stakeholders and others interested in better understanding the trends and the different challenges related to the social phenomenon of the internet in health.

The Internet has been a reality in Brazil for more than 20 years. Its growth has been encouraged by the government, by large telecom companies, and by small and medium Internet service providers, as well as by rapidly increasing demand. The achievements to date are clear, but almost half the population is still not participating in the digital world. Furthermore, the cost of broadband is still high and its quality should be improved so that it will be possible to take advantage of all the benefits it can bring, whether related to health, education, or even the exercise of political rights. It is necessary, therefore that the Brazilian Internet be fast, reliable, and accessible. This book brings together 23 specialists in various areas related to broadband, specialists who wanted to discuss Brazil’s public policies and regulations as well as the progress and challenges related to expanding access to broadband Internet service. The 16 chapters also address the evolution of the country’s broadband infrastructure, including experiences of entrepreneurship and public-private partnerships. This debate is fundamental for Brazil’s technological, economic and social progress.

In order to alleviate poverty, people-oriented projects (those dealing with activities such as institutional development, health, family planning, education, and rural development) must be well-targeted towards the most vulnerable groups. However, official 'top-down' information is incapable of identifying, prioritising and 'marking out' these groups at a local level, and the result is too often an unfair, inefficient and ineffective allocation and use of the resources of social programmes. The author argues that a 'process approach' is often necessary to geneate relevant knowledge about local needs, especially in poor urban and heterogeneous areas. Such an approach fosters flexibility and adaptability to the local context. The book analyses the whole approach to information handling which was developed in the Brazilian project. The different phases are analysed; the collection and processing of data and the construction of an information system to be used for decision-making.

It has been more than 20 years since Brazil's 1988 Constitution formally established the Unified Health System (Sistema Unico de Saude, SUS). Building on reforms that started in the 1980s, the SUS represented a significant break with the past, establishing health care as a fundamental right and duty of the state and initiating a process of fundamentally transforming Brazil's health system to achieve this goal. This report aims to answer two main questions. First is have the SUS reforms transformed the health system as envisaged 20 years ago? Second, have the reforms led to improvements with regard to access to services, financial protection, and health outcomes? In addressing these questions, the report revisits ground covered in previous assessments, but also brings to bear additional or more recent data and places Brazil's health system in an international context. The report shows that the health system reforms can be credited with significant achievements. The report points to some promising directions for health system reforms that will allow Brazil to continue building on the achievements made to date. Although it is possible to reach some broad conclusions, there are many gaps and caveats in the story. A secondary aim of the report is to consider how some of these gaps can be filled through improved monitoring of health system performance and future research. The introduction presents a short review of the history of the SUS, describes the core principles that underpinned the reform, and offers a brief description of the evaluation framework used in the report. Chapter two presents findings on the extent to which the SUS reforms have transformed the health system, focusing on delivery, financing, and governance. Chapter three asks whether the reforms have resulted in improved outcomes with regard to access to services, financial protection, quality, health outcomes, and efficiency. The con

Background: The prevalence of chronic pain has increased in Brazil. In general, people suffering from this condition do not know where or how to obtain appropriate treatment. On the other hand, there is a lack of specialized professionals in the field. The internet thus becomes a useful tool to provide chronic pain sufferers with more information about their condition. Even so, international research has concluded that most chronic pain content is of low or medium quality. This research aims to investigate if Brazilian patients use the internet to research chronic pain and if they worry about the quality of the information they find.Method: This descriptive research was carried out through an electronic questionnaire between January and February of 2019, containing 16 questions about using the internet to obtaining information about pain. To verify how an individual evaluates the quality of the information, HONcode and DISCERNu2019s instrument proposals were both used as references. The sample consisted of 164 people with pain, 90.2% had chronic pain, 66.9% had married, 82.1% had women, the average age was 40.6 years. Results: Of the participants, 90.1% of the participants accessed the internet on a daily basis and 90.5% used the Internet to research chronic pain. Most used media: 94.8% search tools, 59% Facebook, 49.3% YouTube. Regarding the quality of the information: 88.1% were concerned about it; 85.6% stated that the author had thecnical prowess, 78.8% observing whether the language was easy to understand and 43.3% whether the information is up-to-date. Of those who used the internet, 92.3% said that the research helped them deal with their pain in some way, and 91.8% answered that they would use it again to research the subject. Conclusion: In light of the results and the existence of mostly low- and medium-quality information about pain on the internet, it is fundamental to provide clarification to patients so that they can evaluate the quality of the information. Health practitioners must also learn to use the online tools as allies in fostering health and must commit to developing better content to improve the information available.
