Excerpt from The Influence of the Climate of California Upon Its Literature HE study of the literature of a T people is far more than a mere investigation into words and the manner of their arrangement. Rightly conducted, it is a probing into the inner self of the man who used the words, an investigation into his thoughts, feelings, emotions, environment, social and poli tical life, religion, aspiration. By its means, we are enabled to comprehend all that is meant by the history of a people, its civilization, its real life. In the present article I wish to con sider the influence climate has had upon the literature of California, first, by its direct and indirect influence upon men, and second, as it offers men subjects and objects for discourse. Excerpt from The Resources of California: Comprising Agriculture, Mining, Geography, Climate, Commerce, Etc. Etc., And the Past and Future Development of the State I undertake to write the resources of a state, which, though young in years, small in population, and remote from the chief centres of civilization, is yet known to the furthest corners of the earth, and, during the last twelve years, has had an influence upon the course of human life, and the prosperity and trade of nations, more powerful' than that exerted during the same period by kingdoms whose subjects are numbered by millions, whose history dates back through thousands of years, and whose present stock of wealth began to accumulate before our continent was discovered, or our language was formed. I write of a land of wonders. I write of California, which has astonished the world by the great migration that suddenly built the first large Caucasian community on the shores of North Pacific by her vast yield of gold, amounting within thirteen years to $7 which has sensibly affected the markets of labor and money in all the leading nations of Christendom; by the rapid development and great extent of her commerce; by the greatness of her chief port, which at one time had more large ships at her anchorage than. Excerpt from California of the South: Its Physical Geography, Climate, Resources, Routes of Travel, and Health-Resorts, Being a Complete Guide-Book to Southern California In the mountain-chains, also, a similarity and again a difference may be noted. Upon each coast in the southern portion a system of mountain-chains follows the shore-line at a greater or less distance inland. Upon the Atlantic side this system, the Appalachian, begins in Northern Georgia, and extends continuously through the Carolinas, Virginia, and Pennsylvania, finally disappearing in Northern Maine. It runs parallel to the coast, and at a distance of from two to three hundred miles inland. South of this line the land ceases, and the great heated body of the Gulf waters ex tends across the southern border of the continent, sending its modifying influence, borne by the Gulf winds, far inland along the open valley-way of the Mississippi. North of Central New York the chain begins to break down, leaving the country Open upon the north and west to the cold winds which sweep down from the polar seas, and from the great frozen plains which extend to the mouth of the Mackenzie. The northwesterly winds gather an increased harshness from the winter-chilled waters of the Great Lakes, across which they pass. This Appalachian system is made up of mountains of limited altitude, ranging only from two to three thousand feet in height, and broken by numerous passes and low reaches. Between these mountains and the sea lies a coast-plain, broad, continuous, fertile, watered by many rivers, and broken by no transverse range of mountains.
