In view of the current global crisis, in which war conflicts and waves of refugees reinforces the existing mistrust and negative attitudes towards the religions as causes of violence, the question arises: How do matters stand with Christianity in Europe? How could canonical tradition/law and reformation, resp. ecclesiastical dogmas and European values be reconciled today? Europe? Do the Christian Churches still need a kind of Reformation? The jubilee of the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther's theses is a great opportunity to pursue these questions, as well as to reevaluate the spiritual and socio-political impact of the Reformation. The following issue of the Labyrinth-Journal offers not only Protestant, but also Catholic, Orthodox, non-Christian and even atheistic contributions to these topics. It also celebrates the 110th Anniversary of the elaboration of the Roerich Pact discussing its perspectives of a Reformation through Culture.
The 500th anniversary of Luther's 95 theses in 2017 was the first such commemoration in which the global dimensions of the reformation were highlighted. This volume - the outcome of a conference held at the Fachhochschule fur Interkulturelle Theologie Hermannsburg in June 2016 - reflects theological, political and social interactions between Africa, Asia, the Americas and Europe and explores new ways in which Reformation and World Christianity can be connected. This volume presents in English the official Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification, confirmed by the Lutheran World Federation and the Roman Catholic Church in Augsburg, Germany, in October 1999. The result of decades of Lutheran-Roman Catholic dialogue, this primary document represents an ecumenical event of historical significance. Included in the volume are the Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification and the Official Common Statement with its Annex. These texts are recommended for careful study in seminaries and parishes and for reading by individual Christians. It is hoped that the Joint Declaration will deepen understanding of the biblical message of justification and also serve to further reflection within the wider ecumenical movement.
The Failure of Denominationalism and the Future of Christian Unity One of the unforeseen results of the Reformation was the shattering fragmentation of the church. The Reformation was the single most important event of the early modern period of Western civilization. What started out as a pastoral conflict about the sale of grace for money ultimately became a catalyst for the transformation of Western culture. When Martin Luther published his 95 Theses in October 1517, he had no intention of starting a revolution. In this ground-breaking study, Jc Beall shows that the fundamental "problem" of Christology is simple to see from the role that Christ occupies: the Christ figure is to have the divine and essentially limitless properties of the one and only God but Christ is equally to have the human, essentially limit-imposing properties involved in human nature, limits essentially involved in being human. The role that Christ occupies thereby appears to demand a contradiction: all of the limitlessness of God, and all of the limits of humans. This book lays out Beall's contradictory account of Jesus Christ — and thereby a contradictory Christian theology.
