Excerpt from The Ideas of the Apostle Paul: Translated Into Their Modern Equivalents The purpose of this book is not critical nor exegetical I do not propose to write another commentary on the Pauline letters, nor to examine accurately the different hypotheses in regard to them which have recently occupied so much attention. I would rather develop the radical convictions which were the source of Paul's power, and make intelligible to common readers the pivotal ideas, around which his thoughts revolved. I wish to translate into the language of common life the great beliefs of his soul, which have been so long hidden by an obscure theological phraseology. If I can succeed, even in a limited extent, in doing this, I shall hope that this book may find a place in the vast library of works which have this apostle for their subject. That the interest in Paul and his writings is not diminishing is evident from the many valuable publications of the past few years which have given us original views of Pauline Christianity.
