This is the second volume in the "Hypnotism in Victorian and Edwardian Era Fiction" series, published by Themes & Settings in Fiction Press. The two stories collected here were published during the time of the Jack the Ripper killings, and they are among the earliest fictional accounts dealing with the Whitechapel murders. Both of these stories have Jack the Ripper being an American, who travelled from New York City to London to commit the murders, and the Ripper commits his crimes while under the influence of hypnotism. The first story, "The Whitechapel Mystery; A Psychological Problem ("Jack the Ripper")," is a novel authored by N. T. Oliver, and originally published in 1889 by the Eagle Publishing Company. The second story, "The Whitechapel Horrors," is a short tale, published anonymously in two American newspapers, shortly after the murder of Mary Jane Kelly in November 1888.Also included is a lengthy biographical profile on Edward Oliver Tilburn. "N. T. Oliver" was a pseudonym for the highly interesting Edward Oliver Tilburn. Besides being an author, Tilburn was a minister, actor, lecturer, secretary for several cities' Chambers of Commerce, snake-oil salesman, Christian psychologist, as well as an accused embezzler, shady real estate broker, and a self-proclaimed medical doctor.

The electrifying new thriller from New York Times bestselling author Stephen Hunter takes you deep inside the mind of the most notorious serial killer of all time: Jack the Ripper. In the fall of 1888, Jack the Ripper slaughtered five prostitutes in London’s seamy Whitechapel District. He did not just kill—he ripped with a butcher’s glee—and then, after the particularly gruesome slaying of Mary Jane Kelly, he disappeared. For 127 years, Jack has haunted the dark corners of our imagination, the paradigm of the psychotic killer. We remember him not only for his crimes, but because, despite one of the biggest dragnets in London history, he was never caught. I, Ripper is a vivid reimagining of Jack’s personal story entwined with that of an Irish journalist who covered the case, knew the principals, charted the investigation, and at last, stymied, went off in a bold new direction. These two men stalk each other through a city twisted in fear of the madman’s blade, a cat-and-mouse game that brings to life the sounds and smells of the fleshpot tenderloin of Whitechapel and all the lurid acts that fueled the Ripper headlines. Dripping with intrigue, atmosphere, and diabolical twists, this is a magnificent psychological thriller from perennial New York Times bestseller Stephen Hunter, who the San Francisco Examiner calls “one of the best storytellers of his generation.”

One man, Jack the Ripper, haunted the dark streets of Whitechapel in the year 1888. One may not wish to call him a man, for, at the end of the day, he never was, not entirely. The Ripper was and always has been more of a specter than man, but who is he? The stories you've been told couldn't be further from the truth--a barber, a doctor, even a prince? Ahead is a look into the real Ripper's story from his eyes and those among him. The riveting story of Jack and his most beloved friend, John, along with those they saved, and those they damned at the request of the goddess, Fate, finally comes to light. This is a story of loss, demons, witches, and the torment of one man by the puppeteering hands of one very stingy individual named old Nick.

“HYPNOSIS is nothing new. It was known long before Greek civilization existed, or the foundations of the Pyramids were laid. It probably dates back to before the dawn of history. Over three thousand years ago it was cultivated and practised by the Hindoo Priesthood, who perpetuated its secrets and mysteries by divulging them only to care-fully selected youths, destined to become priests in their turn, and impressed with the same urgency of self-preservation and secrecy as themselves.” “I do not put forward hypnosis as a quack remedy—a cure-all. It is not. It is a scientific fact. To what further end new research will lead, it is impossible to say. It is indeed improbable that the human mind will ever probe to the bottom of it; for the subconscious mind is of the essence of life itself, and to understand it fully might well be to wrest from Man the secret of Death and the power over it. But this book is not to that extent speculative. I have deliberately kept to facts within my own knowledge and practice. I have tried to show how easily this great science may be used by every man, woman and child in the world for his own benefit.”—Dr. Alex Erskine, Preface
