Excerpt from History of the Presbyterian Church in South Carolina, Vol. 2 In the vear 1849, the Synod of South Carolina adopted a scheme for securing a History of the Church covered by their jurisdiction. The scheme was elaborate, embracing many particulars: and it was the pleasure of Svnod to appoint the present writer their Historio grapher. The ofiice involved an amount of labor and consumption of time, in the preparation of the first volume, of whlch he did not have the least conception, although the scheme, as marked out, was not fully aecom plished. The History was to be brought down to 1850, the middle of this Century. In 1870 the first volume was issued, bringing the work down to the year 1800. The volume which is now issued, has been prepared at such intervals as could be secured in vacation, when the author was relieved from his ordinary official duties. As the whole of an ordinary generation has passed away-since the year 1850, the year tn which his appointment extended, it has been the desire of the author to bring the History down more nearly to the present time, and he had, to some extent, received the materials for doing so. But dur ing the past Summer his health began seriously to fail him, and his most judicious friends advised him to stop at the original limit of saying that it was the proper place to stop: that the History of the Church through our-late civil war, and the efforts it put forth in those days of supreme trial and since, deserve a fuller treatment than he could now give it. To this advice he has yielded, and although this did not occur until the work showed manifest allusions in several instances to a later period, he removed from the remainder of his manu script all such references, except those which could not well be erased. Some of the materials furnished from the Churches are brief. Others far more extended, which, in some instances, have been greatlv abbre viated, and in others more amply given. The author is fully conscious of the many defects of his work, and submits the result of his labors to that indulgence of his brethren which it so greatly needs. Excerpt from A Popular History of the Presbyterian Church in the United States of America This volume is designed to trace concisely but clearly the History and Principles Of the Presbyterian Church from the time of Henry VIII. To the Close of the Gen eral Assembly of 1899. The effort has been to present the facts in such history, and note their influence; mean while, to give special attention to the all-important phase of the inner Christian life of the Church. In ascertain ing the knowledge in respect to the latter subject, atten tion has been directed, as occasion required, to the lives and labors of leading men in the ministry, as well as lay men, around whom clustered influences for good, that often extended far and wide in their respective communi ties, and even to the Church at large. Excerpt from Unfinished Business of the Presbyterian Church in America IT is a good thing for each denomination to seek to determine as clearly as it can its own distinctive duty. Unless it does this it is not in a position to plan its proper courses Of action or to draw out and use the resources of its membership. It is in no presumptuous or vaunting Spirit that the different groups of Christians in our country to-day are seeking thus to ascertain each its own rightful share in the one great task. They are working together in more united and trustful relations than ever before and their work both separately and together will be far more effective by reason Of their sure discernment Of their own respective Obligations. Excerpt from History of the Presbyterian Church in the United States of America, Vol. 1 The reunion of the two branches of the Presbyterian Church in this country, happily effected in 1869 after a division of more than thirty years, has called for the revision of a work prepared during the period of their separation. It has not been thought necessary to add to it the record of the steps Which led to the reunion, as these are embodied in the volume entitled Presby terian Reunion Memorial, published in 1870; but in order to do impartial justice to the position and views of the two parties from the time when they first appeared, certain changes and modifications of statement have been deemed necessary, and these have been embodied in this revised edition. So far as most of the statements of facts are con cerned, very little change has been required, but what before was asserted without qualification as to the rela tion and action of the two parties has been so modified that the party by Whom such assertion was regarded as historically true or just is alone made responsible for it. In other words, the historian has allowed each party to speak for itself, representing its own views, while the reader is left at liberty to draw his own conclusions. Excerpt from An Appeal to the Young Men of the Presbyterian Church in the Synod of South Carolina and Georgia Among the many evidences of a low state of religious feeling in this portion of our church, is the small number of young men of piety who are selecting the ministry as their field of labor. Many of our churches lie waste and unoccupied a large extent of country in which the doc trine and discipline of Presbyterianism would find ready support, is unvisited by the feet of our ministers; our theological seminary, reared thus far with much labor and sacrifice, is frequented by comparatively a little band of students; our missionary, education, tract, and Sunday school organizations languish, because we have not men coming forward for the ministry in numbers sufficient to meet the demand and to secure the best good of society. While the church elsewhere is instinct with life and action, and is rousing herself with surprising energy to the work of converting the world, a gloomy lethargy has crept Over our Southern Zion, which makes the heart sad. Excerpt from A Manual of the United Presbyterian Church of North America, 1751-1887 Very Christian should be in sympathy with his church, and so imbued with its spirit that he can feel at home in its work and its worship. Then, and only then, can he en joy that restful feeling which springs from confidence and love. But to obtain this he must know its history and its mission, its faith and its spirit, its work and its workers, and become so identified with it in all its parts as to enjoy the pleasures of its memories and of its hopes. The United Presbyterian Church of North America did not head at a single fountain. Several springs united their tiny rills at different times to form its stream. It is the result of several unions, and its antecedents are therefore more numer ous and fragmentary than that of most churches. This has thrown a veil of obscurity over much of its past history, for while one of its constituent parts was alien to the others, they would take but little interest in each other's history and ministry. The time as well as the occasion for such ignor ance is now happily past. Twenty-three years of peaceful union and healthful growth has so unified and consolidated the church that her sons and daughters should feel a kindly family interest in all her ancestral branches. Children's children are the crown of old men; and the glory of children are their fathers. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
