Excerpt from The Gulf and Inland Waters The narrative in these pages follows chiefly the official reports, and it is believed will not be found to conflict seriously with them. Official reports, however, are liable to errors of statement and especially to the omission of facts, well known to the writer but not always to the reader, the want of which is seriously felt when the attempt is made not only to tell the gross results but to detail the steps that led to them. Such omissions, which are specially frequent in the earlier reports of the Civil War, the author has tried to supply by questions put, principally by letter, to surviving witnesses. A few have neglected to answer, and on those points he has been obliged, with some embarrassment, to depend on his own judgment upon the circumstances of the case; but by far the greater part of the officers addressed, both Union and Confederate, have replied very freely. The number of his correspondents has been too numerous to admit of his thanking them by name, but he begs here to renew to them all the acknowledgments which have already been made to each in person. Excerpt from On the Gulf: The Companion Library So mighty is the Mississippi, curving in a crescent as it sweeps by the city, and so vast are the bayous and lakes. About her, that one would not easily suppose New Orleans had raised her splendor more than a hundred miles from the sea. There is something romantic and marvellous in her seat among so many waters and below the level of the river that pushes itself through innumerable mouths far out' into the Gulf below her. Excerpt from The Gulf Coast The train, with clanging bell, rumbles slowly by long rows Of buildings, with low, peaked roofs and heavy-arched columns. They are resonant with the dialect of every race and nation on the globe, from the taciturn tongue of'the native Western Indian to the verbose vocalization of the almond-eyed, pig-tailed child of the Orient, from the harsh consonant-conquering speech of the Norseman and the Teuton to the melodious and softly-modulated language of the Latin. The rumble of the train can not drown the hum of converse in this modern Babel. This is the famous French Market, one of the greatest curiosities of New Orleans.
