Excerpt from The History of the Struggle for Parliamentary Government in England, Vol. 2 of 2 We have now reached a critical point of time in the great war between the King and the Parliament of England. The two men who had been hitherto the leading spirits on the side of the Parliament had vanished from the scene. Hampden was dead, and Pym was dead; but they can hardly be said to have died before their work was done. In such business as the impeachment of Strafford and the carrying of the Grand Remonstrance, they had done their work well and thoroughly. But work of another kind had now to be done for which they were not equally well fitted; and two men were now coming upon the stage who were the men to do that work. Excerpt from Local Government in England, Vol. 1 of 2 This book is the result of studies, prosecuted for many years, concerning the development of the domestic politics of England during the nineteenth century. What remains to be said of the origin and plan of the book, besides the explanations given in the introductory chapter, is mainly of a personal character. When I came the first time to the shores of England, more than ten years ago, it was as a student of English Law and Constitution entirely imbued with the ideas and judgments which the great German jurist and scholar, Rudolf von Gneist, had expressed in the many legal and political writings of his long career. But soon I discovered that those writings were not only in many ways obsolete, having been long passed by current practice and by modern legislative reforms, but also that the general idea of the modern political history of England, as given by Gneist, stood in inexplicable contradiction to the real development and the true nature of political facts. These first impressions have been strengthened by incessant study in England itself, until out of my doubts of the theories and judgments of Gneist there has resulted a view of modern English politics, independent of, and in essence opposed to, those views of Gneist which have so constantly been accepted as authoritative by continental learning. Here I have not to explain or justify a view which must rather be justified by the book itself. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The History of England, Vol. 1 of 2 A word more on the subject of these volumes. It must be remembered that they contain details of the political history of England only; that is, merely and solely, of the form of the government, and of the relations of the country, in what may be termed its corporate capacity as a nation, with other nations. It does not contain a history of the progress of society, or of that of science, physical, intellectual, or moral branches of history far more important, it is true, but still distinct from political his tory political history, though connected with and in a great measure dependent on these, being only indirectly, and, in many respects, remotely so. Hence it happens that, in this, as in all other political histories, a vast deal is seen of the mime! Naturerasucs TO the american edition. Excerpt from History of the Commonwealth of England, Vol. 2: From Its Commencement, to the Restoration of Charles the Second The chronicle of their successors divides itself under two heads: first, to explain in what manner they contrived to clear away all obstacles, and obtain an adequate area for reducing their speculations into practice; and secondly, to shew how they fashioned and conducted their republic, after the preliminaries were effected. In the first of these, the greater degree of subtlety was required; in the second the greater portion of original talent and genius was displayed. The obscure labour of the architect, which precedes the laying the first stone and erecting the shell of his edifice, will frequently be found not less memorable and worthy of record, than all the success and splendour of execution, which are more adapted to awaken the admiration of the many.
