Excerpt from The Genius, and Character of Burns Burns is by far the greatest poet that ever sprung from the bosom of the people, and lived and died in an humble condition. Indeed, no country in the world but Scotland could have produced such a man; and he will be for ever regarded as these glorious representative of the genius of his country. He was born a poet, if ever man was, and to his native genius alone is owing the perpetuity of his fame. For he manifestly had never very deeply studied poetry as an art, nor reasoned much about its principles, nor looked abroad with the wide ken of intellect for objects and subjects on which to pour out his inspiration. The condition of the peasantry of Scotland, the happiest, perhaps, that providence ever allowed to the children of labor, was? not surveyed and speculated on by him as the field of poetry, but as the field of his own existence; and he chronicled the events that passed there, not merely as food for his imagination as a poet, but as food for his heart as a man. Hence, when inspired to compose poetry, poetry came gushing up from the well of his human affections, and he had nothing more to do, than to pour it. like streams irrigating a meadow, in many a cheerful tide over the drooping flowers and fading verdure of life. Excerpt from Life of Robert Burns With Murdoch we learned to read English tolerably well, and to write a little. He taught us, too, the English Grammar. I was too young to profit much by his lessons in grammar, but Robert made some proficiency in it, a circumstance of considerable weight in the unfolding of his genius and character; as he soon became remarkable for the fluency and correctness of his expression, and read the few books that came in his way with much pleasure and improvement, for even then'be was a reader when he could get a book. Murdoch, whose library at that time had no great variety in it, lent him 'the Life of Hannibal, ' which was the first book he read (the school books excepted), and almost the only one he had an opportunity of reading while at school for The Life of Wallace. Excerpt from Robert Burns But otherwise the story of Burns's life has been told with such minuteness of detail, that the internal evidence of his poetry would seem only to be called in to verify or correct the verdict of tradition and the garbled gossip of those wise after the fact of his fame. It is so easy after a man has compelled the attention of the world to fill up the empty years of his life when he was all unknown to fame, with illustrative anecdotes and almost forgotten incidents, revealed and coloured by the light of after events! This is a penalty of genius, and it is sometimes called fame, as if fame were a gift given of the world out of a boundless and unintelligent curiosity, and not the life-record or work achieved. It is easier to collect ana and to make them into the patchwork pattern of a life than to read the character of the man in his writings; and patchwork, of necessity, has more of colour than the homespun web of a peasant-poet. Excerpt from A Primer of Burns These pages are mainly intended to supply the reader of Burns with such facts concerning his life and works, as are most necessary for the understanding of his poetry. These facts have been chiefly derived from the editions by Chambers and Scott Douglas; the latter's arrangement of the poems has also been followed in tracing the development of the poet's work. The bibliography has been selected from various sources, and it is hoped that no work of importance has been omitted. Excerpt from The Poetical Works of Robert Burns Lar not men of re ection think it a super uous labour to trace the rise and progress ofa character like Robert Burns. Born in the condition ofa peasant, he rose by the force ofhis own mind into distinction and in uence; and in his works he has exhibited what are so rarely found, the charms of original genius. With a deep knowledge of the human heart, his poetry exhibits high powers of imagination: it displays, and as it were embalms', the peculiar manners of his country; and it may be considered as a monument, not to his name only, but to the expiring genius of an ancient and once independent nation. Excerpt from The Life and Works of Robert Burns, Vol. 4 of 4 Although the final volume of the New Edition of Dr Robert Chambers's Life and Works of Robert Burns is larger than any of its predecessors, the strictly biographical portion is compara tively small. But as the period embraced in it has been the subject of considerable controversy - especially as to the origin and dates of several of Burns's poems and as to the determining causes of his death - investigations begun by Dr Robert Chambers after the publication of the first edition have been completed, the result being a partial re - grouping of poems and songs, and a considerable recasting of narrative. Some argumentative matter bearing on the reputation and habits of Burns during the latest years of his life, which was formerly given as an appendix, is accordingly incorporated either with the text of the biography or with the closing Essay, in which an attempt is made to appraise the character of the man and the work of the poet. As in the first edition, Versicles, Songs Improved, Fragments, and Doubtful Poems are given apart from the body of the work. N o effort has been spared to make the Indexes at once exhaustive and convenient for purposes of reference.
