Military drones and space drones had evolved to become the new air force and space force. Highly advanced drones had taken over the skies and outer space, not only to fight wars, but they were also used for tasks such as security and traffic control over non-warring territories. Smart drones, equipped and embedded with the latest in artificial intelligence and battery technologies, were accorded prime importance in commercial, military, medical, and civilian applications. For military and drone buffs, including artificial intelligence savants, the year was 137 AOD, or Year 137 in the Age of Drones. It was 137 years after two historical milestones had altered the world, encompassing both the developed and the developing countries. The first historical milestone had been the worldwide propagation of DAPI, or Drone Application Programming Interface, which enabled both humans and drones to reliably communicate and seamlessly interact between them. DAPI was widely accepted and eventually became the global standard because of its open source DRONAL programming language, or short for: Direct Resonance Optical Neural Artificial Language. Another historical milestone had been the enactment and passage into law of The Drones Act by the United States Congress more than a century ago. The Drones Act was considered a landmark piece of legislation allowing drones embedded with cutting-edge machine learning and state-of-the-art artificial intelligence to engage in commercial activities, including leasing land and real properties, among others. A consortium composed of the private sector and the military establishment had put up several drone ports throughout the country decades ago. Each drone port had a research facility as an adjunct. The Drones Act likewise included a special digital currency, the Drone Crypto Coin, for sentient drones to use.

Drones are unmanned aerial vehicles, the sizes of which are as varied as their appearance and fields of application. They are used in numerous civilian areas - but above all are considered the most important war technology since the invention of the atomic bomb. Today's drones are the further development of unmanned balloons, remotely guided weapons, and model airplanes. Taking this historical starting point, the publication concerns itself with the use of drones and their hybrid function as toys, war technology, and an economic factor. As a technology that unifies absolute oppositions, its contradictory nature is demonstrated in all its facets: from a surveillance device to an instrument for resistance and protest, from an animated object in the animistic sense to their use in strategic warfare. The publication also examines future developments, such as questions on transhuman consciousness and artificial intelligence. Based on selected works by international artists, socially relevant issues are negotiated in a new way - and discussed from a scientific perspective in a transdisciplinary manner.

While millions of Americans go about their daily lives, halfway around the world an al-Qaeda cell hatches a deadly new terror plot. It's unthinkable in its devastation. It's brilliantly easy in its execution. And it's capable of bypassing all the security measures the United States implemented in the decade since 9/11. First, a Delta flight crashes on departure into Lake Michigan. Eight hours later, a United aircraft comes down over western Iowa. For the second time since flying was invented in 1903, the US airline industry is forced to a standstill. The message is clear. Stop flying--ruin the economy. Keep flying--more people will die. Now Homeland Security Director of Counter-Intelligence Jack Riley must lead an FBI task force in a frantic search to discover and eliminate the plot before more people are killed or the economy crashes permanently. The clock is ticking...
