Excerpt from The French Revolution in English History He showed in the army the same power of leading men which he had possessed in his teaching life, and the same power of attracting love. His letters will, I understand, be published, together with the full memoir. For the present it will be enough to record briefly the manner of his death. It was on the night of 4th November 1915, in a thick fog, that he was out on patrol with his servant and friend, Private Thomas Kenny, when some Germans, who were lying out in a ditch in front of their parapet, Opened fire, and he fell shot through both thighs. Kenny took him on his back, and through heavy and repeated fire crawled about for more than an hour, trying to find his way in the fog back to our trenches. Brown repeatedly urged Kenny to leave him, but Kenny would not. At last, when the wounded man had lost consciousness and Kenny him self was almost exhausted, he came to a ditch which he recognised. Here he left Brown and went on to look for help. Eventually he found some men at a listening post, and guided them back to where Brown lay, though the enemy opened heavy fire with rifles and machine guns and threw bombs at thirty yards' distance. When Brown was at last brought in he recovered consciousness for a short time. We hear that he smiled and said, Well, Kenny, you're a hero, and soon afterwards died. Kenny was awarded the Victoria Cross. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from England and the French Revolution, 1789-1797 By the close of the year 1791 no question in English politics received greater attention than did the French Revolution. The first thing that requires explanation in this discussion, therefore, is the process by which the domestic affairs of France became in so short a time the vital question on which the political parties in England were divided. Several events which took place in the latter part Of 1789, in 1790, and in the early months Of 1791 prepared the way for the introduction of this troublesome question into the party politics of Great Britain. Chief among these events was the publication of three pamphlets. It is not likely that any one of these productions had the effect which its author anticipated. Probably no one of them, if left alone, would have exerted any considerable influence on the English people. Their importance lies in the subsequent events to which they had been a necessary prelude, and we cannot understand these events without some knowledge Of the nature of the pamphlets and the circumstances which at tended their publication. Excerpt from The French Revolution and the English Novel This study in the tendenz novel was begun with the idea of paralleling Dr. Hancock's book, The French Revolution and the English Poets, in furnishing detailed consideration of a literary form which Professor Dowden's general treatment of the period necessarily presents in outline merely. It is evident, however, that the Revolutionary poets and the Revolutionary novelists must rest their claims to our interest on different grounds. A discussion of Wordsworth, Coleridge, Byron, and Shelley needs no justification. But it must be confessed that the novelists we are about to consider can not escape the condemnation of mediocrity. There is scarcely one of them whose work has lived through the intervening century. What, then, shall be our apology for invading their well-merited obscurity? There are two distinct uses of the historical methods in the study of literature. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from History of the French Revolution, Vol. 3 of 4 Very different was the activity and success of their oppo nents, the Democrats. The plan of subjecting all the pro perty and civilisation of France to their will, which they had first promulgated after the l0th of August, and again during the month of December, was now to be brought into full operation by the new ascendancy which this party had acquired through the trial and execution of the king. As the middle class in Paris kept entirely aloof from politics, the sectional assemblies were only attended by a handful of proletaries, who commenced their sittings late in the evening after work hours, and faithfully represented that sovereignty of the people, whose dicta - according. To the doctrine of the J acobins were to be a binding law on the Convention. Care was taken that there should never be any want of orators or exciting themes of declamation: discussions were carried on till late in the night, on the worthlessness of the ministry and the Gironde - ou the intrigues of the Emigres, and the traitors at home - and above all, on the starvation of the poor, the hard-heartedness of the rich, and the means of extermin ating usurers and monopolists. As many articles were made dear by the stagnation of trade and the mass of as signats, there was reason enough for complaint; and the exasperation was increased by the thought that goods existed in plenty, and that they only had a higher price put on them by the merchants, or were altogether withdrawn from the market, in consequence of the uncertain value of the paper money. And thus a fresh outcry was raised against their grinding selfishness and it was again demanded that the State should decree low and fixed prices, and punish those who refused to sell their goods. The word was passed from section to section; wherever any opposition showed itself it was immediately suppressed by a number of resolute Federes; and on the 12th of February the first of those storm petitions - which were so terribly to characterize the year. 1793 - was presented to the Convention. Commissioners of the sections and the Federes, warmly supported by Marat. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from History of the French Revolution of 1789, Vol. 1 Tms work, which is in course of publication in Paris, is now for the first time offered to the public in the English language. It will be completed in ten original volumes, the first two of which are embraced in this. Its author has recently acquired for himself a world-wide rep ata tion as a leading and active member of the Provisional Government of France. He had been previously known in the literary world by his France under Louis Philippe, which had procured for him the reputation of an able and brilliant writer, an original thinker, and a powerful delineator. These traits will be found conspicuous in the present volume, which contains the causes that, in his opinion, led from afar to the great French Revolution of 1789, and the opening scenes of that mighty drama. It has been the object of the translator to present the author's ideas, and more especially in the theoretical and philosophical parts of the work, in, as nearly as possible, his own language. Should there therefore be found passages to which criticism may except as being too literal, this must be his apology therefor. For most of us, the French Revolution has been reduced to jokes about Marie-Antoinette, guillotines and the Scarlet Pimpernel. But for Mark Steel, bestselling author of REASONS TO BE CHEERFUL, the French Revolution was one of the most inspirational moments in human history - a moment when ordinary people changed the world and became extraordinary. It deserves better jokes than that. In this revolutionary new book, Steel banishes stuffiness from history, telling us what happened in France between the storming of the Bastille and the rise of Napoleon, bringing to life the people who made them happen. His account is dominated by bizarre events and splendid characters, from the famously odd Robespierre, Danton and Thomas Paine, to the less well known Drouet, the local postman who arrested the fleeing King because he recognised him as the man off of the money. VIVE LA REVOLUTION is an uproariously serious work of history - brilliantly funny and insightful, it puts the peculiarity of individual people back at the centre of the story.

Excerpt from Lectures on the French Revolution The revenue of France was near twenty millions when Lewis XVI., finding it inadequate, called upon the nation for supply. In a Single lifetime it rose to far more than one hundred millions, while the national income grew still more rapidly; and this increase was wrought by a class to whom the ancient monarchy denied its best rewards, and whom it deprived of power in the country they enriched. As their industry effected change in the distribution of property, and wealth ceased to be the prerogative of a few, the excluded majority perceived that their disabilities rested on no foundation of right and justice, and were unsupported by reasons Of State. They proposed that the prizes in the Government, the Army, and the Church should be given to merit among the active and necessary portion of the people, and that no privilege injurious to them should be reserved for the unprofitable minority. Being nearly an hundred to one, they deemed that they were virtually the substance of the nation, and they claimed to govern themselves with a power proportioned to their numbers. They demanded that the State should be reformed, that the ruler should be their agent, not their master. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The History of the French Revolution, Vol. 2 of 4 M. Thiers here alludes to Carnot, who, to quote the language of Napoleon, organized victory. This eminent republican was a member of the frightful Committee of Public 'safety, but it has been said in his defence, observes a competent authority, that he did not meddle with in atrocities, limiting himself entirely to the war department, for which he thawed so much. Talent, tint his colleagues left it to his exclusive management. He fim daringly claimed for France her natural boundaries; and be conquered by his genius the countries which his ambition claimed. E.
