I. The figured bass is often a formless thing. Form is to music what sense is to language. In this treatise form is discussed from the very first. It is neither presumed nor ignored. In the early work help is obtained from the analogy between metre and accent. The student begins with phrase formation, gradually building up a sentence, and finally working exercises in binary or ternary form, with regular and irregular phrase formation.
