The different dimensions of acculturation, language, personal relationships, self-efficacy, and self-esteem were examined in 65 Iranian immigrant adults (age range 18-30) residing in Los Angeles. The impact of age of arrival, length of residency, and gender were tested on all five scales. Pearson Correlations and the Independent Samples T-test were conducted to analyze the data. Results showed no significant relationship between age of arrival and self-esteem, no significant correlations between self-esteem and length of residency, and no major differences among the two gender groups. However, the results yielded significant relationship between age of arrival and language, and a significant relationship between age of arrival and personal relationships. Furthermore, a significant relationship between language and acculturation and a relationship between personal relationships and self-esteem was noticed. Implications regarding further research on Iranian-American immigrants were discussed.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between self-esteem and American acculturation on the young adult outcomes of a sample of children of U.S. immigrants, and also investigate the changes of acculturation in their adolescence. Methods: This study uses publicly available data from Children of Immigrants Longitudinal Study (CILS) (N=1,454). This study utilizes the independent variables of self-esteem and acculturation and young adult outcomes as the dependent variable. Results: Results indicated that higher self-esteem is correlated with lower income satisfaction. The members of the sample who indicated an assimilationist acculturation style had higher income and income satisfaction, and acculturation was found to increase within the sample throughout adolescence. Discussion and Implications: English fluency propels the sample through higher levels of education but does not directly benefit their economic outcomes. Rather than taking up government resources, immigrant families are key contributors to the U.S. economy.

The purpose of this project was to create a workshop for second-generation Iranian American young adults who have struggled with understanding and exploring their ethnic identity. Iranian immigration to the United States is a relatively recent event. These families have experienced the ongoing stress of acculturation, which has left an impact on second-generation individuals attempting to balance their identities between multiple cultures. Additional factors influencing a person's identity confusion include diminished psychological well-being, life-cycle stages, and relationships between the generations. This four- hour workshop will provide a structured environment designed to address the ways in which these factors impact the lives of young adults. This workshop will guide participants through understanding these factors, and putting them into the context of their own lives. Participants will conclude the workshop by being encouraged to use their own story to connect with others, linking their narrative to the concepts discussed throughout, and ultimately beginning a dialogue amongst Iranian-Americans.
