Excerpt from The Edinburgh Medical and Surgical Journal, Vol. 38: 1 July, 1832 I was requested to visit an infant seven days after birth, that was bleeding from the umbilicus. The haemorrhage had com menced in the night, shortly after the separation of the funis The gentleman (whose case it was) had made a judicious at tempt to arrest the bleeding by the application of a graduated compress, supported by straps of adhesive plaster, and a roller. In a short time, however, the blood again appeared, trickling from under the bandages, and the poor infant was nearly ex hansted. The applications were removed, and a second attempt was made to compress the bleeding orifice, but with as little success as before, as in a short time blood was again found oozing from beneath the bandages. A third attempt was made to effectually check the effusion of blood, but again failed, and the child died in the afternoon. Upon examining the part after death, the vein was found uncontracted, and the umbilicus was sloughy, ragged, and of a dark colour. I have seen compresses, moistened with powerful astringents, applied to suppress this haemorrhage. I have also seen an attempt made (but unsuc cessfully) to bring together the sides of the bleeding vessel, by passing a hare-lip pin through the integuments, and thus pinching it up. Several cases of this nature have come under my observation, but they have all been fatal except one. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Edinburgh Medical and Surgical Journal, 1832, Vol. 37: Exhibiting a Concise View of the Latest and Most Important Discoveries in Medicine, Surgery, and Pharmacy The fecundity of mankind is then obviously independent of that periodical instinct which regulates the fecundity of qua drupeds. But here an important, and, as far as I know, a novel question presents itself; namely, thatsince the duration of he. Manpmgnancyieonlyninemonthsfiheeameas in thecow and the deer, how does it happen that women do not conceive and bring forth annually as well as they? It is clear that there must be some law in operation which prevents this result, since it is well knownthat the ordinary interval between me oessive births in the same mothers, when the children live to be suckled, is about two years. This interval, be it a little more or less, coupled with the fact of human pregnancy continuing only nirie months, shows that the fecundity of women is by some means restrained, or rather regulated, with something of the same general certainty that happens in brutes from instimt. Excerpt from Edinburgh Medical Journal, Vol. 10: Combining the Monthly Journal of Medicine and the Edinburgh Medical and Surgical Journal; Part II.; January to June, 1865 Beck, while admitting his inability to explain the case, says that it is one of the strongest yet adduced in favour of the opinion, and that its credibility would seem to be established from the character of the reporter, and the publicity attending it: We are told in the narrative that the mother and both children, two years afterwards, appeared before a notary at Lyons1 to attest the fact in a legal manner, and because, it is stated in this declara tion, that it was also partly to prove her (the mother's) gratitude to Dr Desgranges, and partly to give women who may find them selves in a similar predicament, and whose husbands may be deceased previous to the birth of both of the children, a precedent in favour of their virtue and the legitimacy of the child, Caspar, without one reference to the facts of the case as recorded by Desgranges, and which are detailed by him altogether irrespective of any further connexion with the woman herself, dismisses the whole thing in this summary way For my part, I confess that this remarkable proceeding of this woman, so 'virtuous, ' and so grateful to her doctor for having delivered her renders the whole case perfectly incredible.
