Excerpt from The Economy Factor in Steam-Power Plants So far as is known, there is not another single volume comprehensively treating this subject, which in view of its interest and importance is a matter of much wonder. The data used in compiling this treatise has been carefully selected from the results of actual experiments, all mere reports and unauthentic results being absolutely discarded. It is believed, therefore, to represent the only authentic collection of data upon the eco nomic performance of the various power plant constituents. The principal use to which the method for solving for power plant economy described hereinafter may be put, consists in predetermining the results to be derived from various classes of power plants under differ ent conditions. These results may be used by engineering contractors in determining proper values for economy guarantees, by the consulting engineer in comparing the relative merits of various types of proposed installations, by the student in a study of power plant economics, and for various other purposes. Excerpt from Commercial Economy in Steam and Other Thermal Power-Plants: As Dependent Upon Physical Efficiency, Capital Charges and Working Costs This book would be ineffective without the Diagrams and Tables which illustrate it. The Author wishes therefore to gratefully acknowledge his great indebtedness to Mr. H. M. Hodson and to the Publishers for a finer collection of diagrams than has ever before been brought together to elucidate the practical science of Heat Power-Production. Nearly all of these drawings have been made by Mr. Hodson, who has also made a large proportion of the numerical calculations involved in the Tables. All the numerous charts of Costs in Chapter III represent actual ascertained recent costs in Britain. The physical diagrams of Chapter II are mostly reproductions of large-scale drawings used for many years by the author's students and found of great practical utility. These Diagrams and Tables are not mere examples of the laws explained in the text: in most cases they are essentially the full graphical and numerical exhibition of all the practical results of these laws. The Author has long been convinced that engineering science ought not, in the face of difficulties due to the inherent and unavoidable complexity of practical business problems, to take refuge in erroneous approximations whose one only merit is simplicity; but ought, on the contrary, to eliminate difficulty by plotting on accurate squared paper the results of all complex calculations. Those who wish to calculate results to one-tenth of one percent, minuteness will not be satisfied with diagram readings. Excerpt from Steam Power Plants: Their Design and Construction Frequently engineers and others in charge of a manufacturing business, be it a mill, factory or electric generating station, are called upon to design and purchase a steam power plant or parts of it when their knowledge of the machinery that goes into such a plant is more or less limited, and without being able to obtain the benefit of the advice of a competent consulting engineer. It is hoped that this book will be of special value to this class and of some value to all interested in steam power-plant construction. Part of the text appeared in a series of articles in The Engineering Record, and when the demand for them seemed to warrant their being published in book form they were thoroughly revised and considerable new matter added. A number of the illustrations have been selected from articles printed in The Engineering Record during the last two or three years descriptive of steam power-plant construction. They are reprinted without the text that accompanied them, thinking they would be suggestive. Shortly after this book was written in 1902, the author began to practice as a consulting engineer for power-plant design and construction, and, upon revising the work for the edition appearing in 1912, the experience gained has led to some changes and many additions. The chapter on turbines has been added, also much new matter upon the subject of steam piping, condensers, and chimneys. Other parts of the book have been added to and brought up-to-date and a number of new illustrations are presented.
