Notwithstanding the myriad forms of government assistance to American business, the relationship of business to politics in the United States remains a highly antagonistic one, characterized by substantial mutual distrust. This adversarial relationship is both reflected and reinforced not only in American business ideology, but also in America's unique legalistic and confrontational style of regulation, the political strategies of the public interest movement, the American approach to American industrial policy, and the distinctive way Americans think about the subject of business ethics. This volume brings together more than two decades of scholarship on business and politics by one of the leading authorities on this subject. These essays also explore a number of critical contemporary issues, including the ongoing debate over the scope and extent of business power in America, the growth of shareholder protests and consumer boycotts, the changing politics of consumer and environmental regulation, and the emergence of both public and business interest in business ethics. In addition, they place the contemporary dynamics of American business-government relations in both an historical and comparative context. Finally these essays demonstrate e the importance of integrating the study of business by political scientists with the study of politics by students of management. Originally published in 1996. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. This is primarily, but not exclusively, a book on Lindblom. All the pieces in it bear on his work, either as direct commentary on it or criticism of it, or as extensions of his ideas. But at the same time every piece follows the trajectory of its own ideas into the subject matter in which it delves. And these subjects are many and varied. Indeed, the prime purpose of this volume is to make the broad public aware of the full scope and amplitude of Lindblom' s thought and to convey something of the inner coherence that governs it. Anyone who has previously encountered Lindblom only in one manifestation of his multifaceted mind might be surprised to learn that there are so many other facets as well. Merely to list the disciplines to which he has contributed threatens to extend into an academic catalogue of ships. But the truth is that his work is not docilely academic, it refuses to lie down neatly and supinely into the procrustean beds of the established disciplines. Like his closest predecessor, Veblen, he offers a comprehensive treatment of social reality as a whole -- together with something of the same heretical thrust against the academic establishment.

This book examines human capital investment, employment and bargaining at the level of the firm. It attempts the first summary of results that incorporates both human capital investment and employment decisions within firm - union bargaining models, emphasising investment in teams, or groups, of workers. The authors also examine human capital in relation to labour demand as well as the delineation between neoclassical and coalitional firms. Further, they investigate connections between, on the one hand, turnover costs and firm-specific human capital and, on the other, unemployment. Labour market policy topics recur throughout the book and include the choice between pure wage and profit sharing remuneration systems, the issue of whether training should be subsidised by governments, worksharing versus layoff decisions, payroll tax incidence and the choice of compensation system as well as the role of human capital in influencing a firm's voluntary ex ante decision as to whether or not to bargain with an established union.
