Excerpt from The Dublin Review, Vol. 19: July October, 1872 And here we must remark, in Spite of his contact with many working men, how utter must be the Professor's lack of ao quaintance with the real life of the poor, thus completely to exclude from the catalogue of human happiness all considera tions of religion, its hopes, its stimulus, its consolations. Had he but practised that profession which counts him amongst its members, he could hardly have failed to encounter amongst the sick and suffering some poor souls whose one stay and con solation, amidst a crushing accumulation Of earthly woe, has been a trustful belief in a heavenly Father's love, and the prospect of a supernatural union with Him in the life beyond the grave. Excerpt from The Dublin Review, Vol. 19: July, 1896 I. Dr. Bright begins, in reference to St. Peter, with a very cursory glance at Holy Scripture, in which he repeats the argument ex silentio, which was first used against the Petrine supremacy by certain Dutch Protestants. Papal supremacy, he says, must (sic) have found expression in Apostolic writ ings. But it is not found, so he thinks, in the Acts of the Apostles, or the Epistles of St. Paul. Therefore, it did not exist. Those of our readers who are acquainted with Mr. Allies' work, St. Peter, his Name and Office, will find it hard to realise the state of mind which can dismiss the Scrip tural argument with this bold assertion. They will remember that St. Peter stands out in the first half of the Acts in a way which again and again suggests that he had taken the place of our Lord in the government of the kingdom founded by Him. The fact is, that considering on the one hand the plain account in the Gospels of the appointment of St. Peter to be the chief ruler of the Church under Christ, and, on the other hand, the purpose for which the Acts appear to have been written, more is said about Peter than one might have considered necessary. One purpose for which the Acts appear to have been written by St. Luke was that of upholding the authority of St. Paul, whose Apostolate had been questioned and indeed denied. The book is not a narrative of the Acts of the Apostles, but merely of Acts (there is no definite article in the Greek title). It consists of a selection for a purpose. It was to bring out the genuine Apostleship of St. Paul, not as against, or in contrast with, St. Peter, but as against those who would not place him amongst the twelve. There is, therefore, no reason to expect this or that feature of the government to be emphasised, except so far as it would bear upon the purpose of the book. NAMED A BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR BY THE WASHINGTON POST and REAL SIMPLE A profound and enchanting new novel from Booker Prize-longlisted author Niall Williams about the loves of our lives and the joys of reminiscing. You don't see rain stop, but you sense it. You sense something has changed in the frequency you've been living and you hear the quietness you thought was silence get quieter still, and you raise your head so your eyes can make sense of what your ears have already told you, which at first is only: something has changed. The rain is stopping. Nobody in the small, forgotten village of Faha remembers when it started; rain on the western seaboard was a condition of living. Now--just as Father Coffey proclaims the coming of electricity--it is stopping. Seventeen-year-old Noel Crowe is standing outside his grandparents' house shortly after the rain has stopped when he encounters Christy for the first time. Though he can't explain it, Noel knows right then: something has changed. This is the story of all that was to follow: Christy's long-lost love and why he had come to Faha, Noel's own experiences falling in and out of love, and the endlessly postponed arrival of electricity--a development that, once complete, would leave behind a world that had not changed for centuries. Niall Williams' latest novel is an intricately observed portrait of a community, its idiosyncrasies and its traditions, its paradoxes and its inanities, its failures and its triumphs. Luminous and otherworldly, and yet anchored with deep-running roots into the earthy and the everyday, This Is Happiness is about stories as the very stuff of life: the ways they make the texture and matter of our world, and the ways they write and rewrite us.

A thrilling and perplexing investigation of a true Victorian crime at Dublin railway station. Dublin, November 1856: George Little, the chief cashier of the Broadstone railway terminus, is found dead, lying in a pool of blood beneath his desk. He has been savagely beaten, his head almost severed; there is no sign of a murder weapon, and the office door is locked, apparently from the inside. Thousands of pounds in gold and silver are left untouched at the scene of the crime. Augustus Guy, Ireland's most experienced detective, teams up with Dublin's leading lawyer to investigate the murder. But the mystery defies all explanation, and two celebrated sleuths sent by Scotland Yard soon return to London, baffled. Five suspects are arrested then released, with every step of the salacious case followed by the press, clamouring for answers. But then a local woman comes forward, claiming to know the murderer... 'The Dublin Railway Murder is a true-crime masterclass' Philip Gray, author of Two Storm Wood

Excerpt from The Dublin Review, Vol. 19 Art. I. - The Ecclesiastical Architecture of Ireland, anterior to the Anglo-Norman Invasion, comprising an Essay on the Origin and Uses of the Round Towers of Ireland, which obtained the Gold Medal and Prizes of the Royal Irish Academy. By George Petrie, R. H. A. - V. P. R. I. A. Dublin: Hodges and Smith. It rarely falls to the lot of an Irishman, writing upon Irish subjects, to gain such favour from his countrymen, as Mr. Petrie appears to have gained by this work. It has been so well received by all parties, that we trust the time has at length come, when Irish literature and art can be discussed without that political prejudice which too often disgraced them. The work embraces topics of exciting national interest; for though originally a short essay on the Round Towers, read thirteen years ago before the Royal Irish Academy, it has now grown into a quarto volume of more than 450 pages, comprising, together with copious documents on the civilization of Pagan Ireland, historical and monumental evidences of Christian Ireland, previous to the Norman invasion, never yet published. To most people, its chief merit will be the discussion on the Round Towers; but whatever may be the fate of that controversy, Mr. Petrie's name must for ever rank among the first of our ecclesiastical historians. On that period of which he treats, he combines in his own person excellencies never before united; an intimate acquaintance with our written history, supported by its collateral but hitherto sadly neglected evidences, in those churches, monasteries, and other monuments of religious art, which have survived more than a thousand years.
