In 1921, Anton Baumstark delivered two lectures on the development of the Roman Rite to a gathering at the Abbey of Maria Laach. Abbot Ildefons Herwegen offered to publish those lectures, but Baumstark decided to write a book on the topic instead, which was published two years later as On the Historical Development of the Liturgy. It would be another sixteen years before he produced Comparative Liturgy, for which he is better known. Together the two books lay out Baumstark's liturgical methodology. Comparative Liturgy presents his method; On the Historical Development of the Liturgy offers his model. For nearly a century, On the Historical Development of the Liturgy has been valued by specialists in the field of liturgical studies, both for its description of comparative liturgy and for the portrayal of patterns Baumstark discerns in liturgical development. Also significant are the hypotheses Baumstark proposes and the evidence he brings to bear on problems in liturgical history. In this annotated edition, Fritz West provides the first English translation of this work by Anton Baumstark.

Bruce Taylor’s latest volume of sermons for the Common Lectionary (Revised) compiles traditional and story form proclamations for the Sundays and feast days from Advent through Eastertide in Year B of the three-year lectionary cycle. Theologically rich, sacramentally sensitive, and ecumenically minded, these biblically centered sermons articulate God’s love for the whole creation, the profound implications of discipleship, and the necessity of Christian unity. Like its predecessors in Taylor’s first and second journeys through the lectionary, What Happens Next? is intended for use by preachers, educators, seminary students, and devotional readers, who will all find it to be a welcome companion in penetrating the spiritual genius of the liturgical year and the usefulness of preaching from common texts. The book exemplifies how preaching from Mark’s Gospel and the accompanying lectionary readings can shape interaction with the elements of the liturgy to encourage faithful Christian worship. The very uniqueness of Mark among the Gospels is elicited to prompt the whole church and each believer to respond to the question posed implicitly but insistently by the women’s discovery of the empty tomb on Easter morning: What happens next?

"The eighth-century document Historia Ecclesiastica of Germanus, Patriarch of Constantinople (715-730) was for centuries the quasi-official explanation of the Divine Liturgy for the Byzantine Christian world. Although "allegorical" in content, its interest lies in its historical value, for it appeared at a time of great flux in the life of the Byzantine Church, at the outbreak of the iconoclastic controversies, a period which marked a strong shift in theology and piety. The theological significance of this document and its usefulness in understanding the form of the liturgy celebrated in the eighth century is discussed in an extensive introduction by the translator, Paul Meyendorff. The introduction includes an exposition on mystagogical catecheses and the development of an historicizing system of liturgical symbolism. This title is part of the Popular Patristics series."--
