Maurice Maeterlinck (1862 -1949) was a Belgian playwright, poet, and essayist. He was a Fleming, but wrote in French. His plays form an important part of the Symbolist movement. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1911 "in appreciation of his many-sided literary activities, and especially of his dramatic works, which are distinguished by a wealth of imagination and by a poetic fancy, which reveals, sometimes in the guise of a fairy tale, a deep inspiration, while in a mysterious way they appeal to the readers' own feelings and stimulate their imaginations". The Death of Tintagiles, published in 1894 is the author's favorite, and in general estimation his best, play.

Excerpt from The Death of Tintagiles: A Play One could have breathed. One could have looked down on the sea and on the plains beyond the cliffs ... But they preferred to build it deep down in the valley; too low even for the air to come ... It is falling in ruins, and no one troubles ... The walls are crumbling: it might be fading away in the gloom ... There is only one tower which time does not touch ... It is enormous: and its shadow is always on the house. Tintagiles They are lighting something, sister Ygraine ... See, see, the great red windows! ... Ygraine They are the windows of the tower, Tintagiles; they are the only ones in which you will ever see light; it is there that the Queen has her throne. Tintagiles Shall I not see the Queen? Ygraine No one can see her. Tintagiles Why can no one see her? Ygraine Come closer, Tintagiles ... Not even a bird or a blade of grass must hear us. The Performance Studies Reader is a lively and much-needed anthology of critical writings on the burgeoning discipline of performance studies. It provides an overview of the full range of performance theory for undergraduates at all levels, and beginning graduate students in performance studies, theatre, performing arts and cultural studies. The collection is designed as a companion to Richard Schechner's popular Performance Studies: an Introduction (Routledge, 2002), but is also ideal as a stand-alone text. Henry Bial collects together key critical pieces from the field, referred to as 'suggested readings' in Performance Studies: an Introduction. He also broadens the discussion with additional selections. The structure and themes of the Reader closely follow those of Schechner's companion textbook. The articles in each section focus particularly on three primary areas in performance studies, theatre, anthropology and sociology/cultural studies.
