Excerpt from The Dart, 1939 It is your good fortune to have attended Dickinson at a time when dreams of years have been coming to fulfillment. The years 1938 and 1939 will long be remembered at Dickinson as important years: not merely as a time of fulfillment but also as the beginning of larger things. You have not sat in the gallery but rather you have been in the parade. You can truly say all of which I saw, part of which I was. Other duties have prevented my working as closely with you and therefore coming to know you as intimately as most previous classes, but what contacts and associations I have had have been most pleasant indeed. I hope therefore you will permit the following observation. We are apt to think of college strictly as preparation for life. It is more than that it is life. Every experience is a preparation for that which is to fol low; high school, college, the first job all are preparation for that which is ahead. And you are as truly living now as you will ever live. Would you know what the future has in store for you? Would you know what your life is to be? Then in retrospect Study seriously what life here has meant. Unless some new factors enter your life what has been is an index of what may be. Unless there is some new strengthening of the will, some clearer vision, some stronger sense of duty, if you have not measured up to your hopes and ideals here you are apt to continue to fall short. If, on the other hand, you have merited and received the approval of your classmates as indicated by class honors and responsibilities, unless there is some weakening of the will, some dimming of the vision, some loss of a sense of duty, you may expect to continue to enjoy the confidence and appreciation not only of your college classmates but of all with whom you meet and mingle in the world outside classic halls. Excerpt from The Dart, 1932 You have spent one, two, three, or four years at Dickinson; years that are generally supposed to be the most plastic in the life of the individual. What lasting impressions have these years made upon your life? What tools have they given you with which to undertake your tasks, what inspirations to meet life's discouragements, what inner re sources upon which to draw in time of need? Have you been taught how to think? The more recent theory of education insists that one ought to be taught how to think rather than what to think. The former process produces creative thinkers, originators in the fields of human endeavor; the latter pro duces those who will follow the crowd. Has it taught you discrimination? Everywhere you will find the true and the false, the genuine and the spurious, the good and the bad. The line of cleavage between the two, however, is not always apparent. You will need the power of accurate discrimina tion in order to be able to make wise decisions. Have you learned an appreciation of the finer things? Can you enjoy and interpret a great painting, a symphony, a great book? Art, music, and literature enrich the lives of those who become acquainted with them and who are able to understand them. Can you discern the genuine in men, and can you profit by association with such? Have you a philosophy of life? Your attitude toward the problems and meaning of life will determine your conduct. There are two major attitudes toward life. One is summed up briefly in the statement: The world's mine oyster. The other, The Son of Man came not to be ministered unto but to minister. Have you grown while at Dickinson? You can measure in inches or perhaps in feet the improvement you have made while here in throwing the javelin, in putting the shot; and you can measure in seconds the time by which you have lowered your record in the sprints and the distance runs. Can you with equal assurance say that you have increased your measure of self-control, developed your latent powers, increased your spiritual depth, and become a bigger and better individual? Excerpt from The 1930 Dart Nothing of all your experiences at Dickinson will mean more to you than the friendships formed here. It has been truly said that we are a part of all with which we come in contact - people, books, places, events, experiences. They all have their influence upon us. Our friends are those whom, after we have come to measure their influence upon us, we are willing or desire to have interwoven with our lives. They soothe, encourage, strengthen, inspire.
