Excerpt from The Damsel of Darien, Vol. 2 of 2 With the first beams of the morning sun, the Indian warriors of Zemaco, a wild and motly armament, prepared to descend from the mountains into the plain, or rather valley, in which lay the Spanish settlement of Darien. More than five thousand men, detachments from a hundred tribes, which acknowledged the sovereignty of Zemaco, were assembled under the lead of this vindictive chief. They gathered at his summons from the province of Zobayda, where the golden temple of their worship stood, and which they esteemed to be the visible dwelling of their God; Abibeyba, Zenu, and many other provinces, the several cassiques of which, though not present with the quotas which they provided, were yet required by Zemaco to hold themselves in readiness to defend their territories from the incursions of the Spaniards. The hills that rose on three sides of the Spanish settlement were darkened with savage warriors. Exulting in the certainty of victory, they brandished their macanas of palm wood, and shot their arrows upward in defiance, while they sounded their war conchs for the general gathering. Excerpt from The Damsel of Darien, Vol. 1 of 2 The tale which follows will be found to illustrate some of these opinions. Its hero was one of the most gallant and great among the discoverers - a man no less thought ful than valorous having all the virtues, and but very few, and those in small degree. Of the vices of his comrades one who led his companions to fame and victory - who won the greatest advantages in the New World, next to Columbus; and perished through the ingratitude of his sovereign and the miserable baseness of his fellows. With far greater merits, his fate was, nevertheless, the fate of all of those who shared his companion's, and served under the same sway. It was, and must be, the fate of all who toil in behalf of a time which has just enough Of ambition to foster envy into rankness, and too little of gratitude to be. Instant preparations were made for action on board the buccaneer; the guns were loaded and double shotted, with a celerity which proved long-practised skill in the business of death. The lofty and lighter sails were taken in, every impediment along the decks was carefully removed; and all this was done with a zeal and dispatch which showed that every man's heart was in his work. Alvarez, otherwise unoccupied, pa trolled the deck with rapid and impatient steps; but when the enemy opened her fire, and her shot began to tell, the captain ordered every man but the helmsman to go below. Alvarez complied, however, reluct antly, for the Buccaneer's discipline was too stem to allow a moment's hesitation. He diverted his own suspense by observing how that of his comrades' acted on their several natures some drank brandy, though, for once, in moderation; some chewed gunpowder, and some even betook.
