The author of this book had been for several months in India studying the Indian constitutional problem when the Cripps Mission arrived. At Sir Stafford Cripps’ request, Professor Coupland joined his staff, and this book is the result of close personal observation of the Mission at work, reinforced by a thorough knowledge at first hand of the background issues out of which the Cripps Mission was born. With admirable brevity and clarity Professor Coupland traces the course of events in India from the outbreak of the present war, through the “August Offer,” the answering “Sapru Proposals,” the arrival of Sir Stafford Cripps with the Draft Declaration, down to the final rejection of the Draft by all political parties. By a careful analysis of the attitudes of Congress and the Moslem League, as well as those of the minority groups, and the sharp divisions of opinion between opposing factions within the parties, the author is able to show why the negotiations, begun and carried on with high hopes on both sides, eventually broke down. The story of the Cripps Mission is told without bias by a man who cannot regard it as a complete failure, since for the first time in the history of Anglo-Indian relations, the essential sincerity of the British government in general and its emissary in the person of Sir Stafford Cripps in particular was in the main not questioned by the Indian people or their leaders.

This book offers a lively revisionist account of a crucial phase in the life of Stafford Cripps: his meteoric rise from the radical fringe of Parliament on the eve of the war to membership of the War Cabinet in 1942. Cripps' ambassadorship to Moscow was of prime importance in view of the dramatic events during this period - the German conquest of Europe, Britain's struggle for survival and Russia's transformation from neutral to belligerent. Dr Gorodetsky assesses how Britain adapted to react to the changing circumstances and examines the recurrent controversy between Cripps and Churchill over Anglo-Soviet relations. New perspectives are opened on related issues such as the role of the civil service in policymaking, the British and Soviet appreciations of and reactions to intelligence on the planned German invasion of the Soviet Union and the origins of the controversies over assistance to Russia, the launching of the Second Front and the frontier issues.

This book interrogates several strands of Gandhian design, articulations, methods and ideals, through five sections. These include Theoretical Perspectives, Peace and World Order, Revolutionary Experiments, National Integration and Gandhi in Chinese Discourses. The authors seek to provide answers to questions as: Were Gandhian ideas utopian? What is the contemporary relevance of Gandhi? Do his ideas share convergence with theory in world politics and international relations? What was his role in forging national integration? How did his ideologies and experiments with truth resonate with countries as China? The writings also underline that being averse to individualism, for Gandhi it was the realm of societal interests which were significant, encompassing the good of humanity, dignity of labor and village-centric development. Development paradigms and health related challenges are articulated in the book to underline the significance of Gandhi's vision of 'Leave no one behind' to create an egalitarian society with respect and tolerance. The book presents the essential humility and simplicity of Gandhi. This book is a must read for those who seek to understand Gandhi in a way that is candid and inclusive. It's a book that conceals nothing and does not shy away from presenting debates on Gandhi. Moreover, it is a factual account, with contributors having relied extensively on archival materials, essays and an extensive review of literature. Hence, the book is replete with pertinent documentation and scholarship and makes a significant value-addition in the literature on Gandhi.
