DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from The Conquest of Virginia the Forest Primeval: An Account, Based on Original Documents, of the Indians in That Portion of the Continent in Which Was Established the First English Colony in America The present volume is the first of a series on which the author has been engaged for several years. As the work grew, it became apparent that it would be better to issue its parts, written originally merely as chapters, in the form of separate volumes. Before beginning the narrative of the events which occurred on this continent when the English proceeded to take possession of it, it has seemed proper to view the country itself, the stage upon which so important a drama was to be presented, and the race which then occupied it. We are enabled to do this with the aid of the writings of those who lived at that period, and who participated in these scenes. The earliest of these writers, and a very important one, is Thomas Hariot. This man was well known to Sir Walter Raleigh, who allowed him a pension for instructing him in mathematics. He was sent over by Sir Walter with the expedition to Virginia in 1585. He was employed in connection with the Roanoke Island settlement, under the command of Sir Ralph Lane, from June, 1585, to June, 1586.
