Fireweaver is the true story of May Eulitt and the amazing near-death experience she shared with two of her closest friends. Working in the fields on her family farm, she and her companions are struck by lightning and nearly killed. While unconscious, they travel together to an otherworldly place where they are greeted by spirit guides who explain to them the meaning of their experience and the significance it has for their lives back in the real world. Rather than focusing on the details of the near-death experience itself as many other books on this subject have done, this book focuses more on the context into which the near-death experience can be placed. From the standpoint of spiritual practices, religion, and paranormal experiences, May came from a very unusual background. Going back several generations, the women in her family practiced a form of practical magic that they refer to as the Talent. They have been referred to as witches, gypsies, seers, channelers, or fireweavers; individuals with a telekinetic ability to manipulate fire and other forms of energy. The book describes much of this family background and many of the unusual and mystical experiences that May had prior to her near-death experience, such as the time she saw her Great-grandmother use the Talent to summon up a tornado to punish an abusive husband, or the time that she herself was nearly killed by a psychotic minister who believed she was a witch. After tracing May ́s family history up to the point at which her near-death experience takes place, the book then deals with May ́s struggles to come to terms with the near-death experience in her own life. The main goal of the book is to discover the broader perspective; to find meaning in the near-death experience with regard to spiritual beliefs, religious practices, other paranormal phenomena, and life in general. This focus is made more poignant by the fact that May passed away shortly after this book was completed. Together, May Eulitt and Stephen Hoyer made up a writing team well qualified to tell this story. Because of May ́s family background and the spiritual practices in which she was trained, she was able to provide a unique perspective on the near-death experience. In addition, Stephen is a professional psychologist and a knowledgeable expert on near-death experiences and other paranormal phenomena, such as after-death communication and energy medicine. He has taught workshops on near-death experiences, he has consulted with other experts in the field, and for several years he helped May not only with the writing of the book, but also with the processing of the experience itself. The authors regarded this as a very symbiotic process in which they both grew and benefited a great deal. The book is an attempt to share the essence of that experience with a wider public.

A belief in the afterlife - what happens to the spirit, the essence of a person and personality after the body ceases to be - is common to almost every faith and culture the world over. Even people who don't ascribe to a religion or consider themselves spiritual share a fascination in life after death; they may just look at it in a different way. Some will wonder about the existence of heaven or hell; others believe they've seen "dead people," especially those who have been close to them in life; others look for answers to the question "What will happen to me when I die?" In The Complete Idiot's Guide to Life After Death, author and intuitive Diane Ahlquist shares her own knowledge of the subject, as well as the opinions of religious and spiritual leaders and others, like Edgar Cayce and the Dalai Lama, who have long spoken about the possibility and the experience of the afterlife.

Just a few moments before his death, my father looked straight ahead and with a calm voice said to me, 'Almost there!' It has been 20 years since his homeward journey and I have been haunted by those words. What was he seeing that we couldn't see? In my career as a surgeon and a witness for Christ, I have observed many deaths when the last moments were calm and unafraid. Four years as a hospice volunteer brought me even more intimate with those last moments. I think that the valley David wrote of could also represent moments of extreme circumstances in our lives when we are in the Shadow of death: an automobile accident with severe injuries, the sudden loss of a child or spouse, the loss of a career, a consuming fire, a devastating flood, the birth of a stillborn. Do you have the Good Shepherd to guide you through these times? We only have this moment, this breath. Tomorrow is not promised to anyone. Do you have the peace of God that surpasses all understanding? Are you ready to walk through the valleys of your life? Come with me as I walk through the valley of the hospice and witness the grace and comfort that only God can provide for us. Journey with me and meet my Lord. There will be stops along the way as we see how the world deals with the valley. I pray that this book might be a life changing experience for you as we journey to 'Almost there.'
