Borderline personality disorder is a psychiatric diagnosis (301.83) in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV). The International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) has a comparable diagnosis (F60.3) termed emotionally unstable personality disorder.

Over the past decade, there has been a burgeoning of interest in understanding and treating borderline personality disorder, a disorder characterized by extreme emotional reactivity, impulsivity and serious interpersonal difficulties resulting in frequent loss of relationships.
