Excerpt from The Cleveland Medical Gazette, Vol. 15: November, 1899 For years I have advocated the view that every medical col lege should establish a chair of visceral anatomy. The reader may ask why visceral anatomy has claims for a separate chair. Does not the anatomist teach all anatomy? If special or regional anatomy is further required, does not each chair give ample de scription of the department under its charge? I answer both questions positively with an accentuated no. The most needed and most useful of all anatomy for the practitioner is visceral anatomy. But it is the most slighted of all exact anatomical teaching. Have I new methods to offer for the study of anatomy? No but I would make the study of practical anatomy extend over the whole course. The first year work on anatomy should be limited to dissecting animals. Each student should repeatedly dissect every part. The most convenient method would be to employ the dog, embryonic pigs, sheep and calves from the slaughter-house. Excerpt from The Cleveland Medical Gazette, Vol. 3: June, 1888 Broncho-pneumonia leads to the formation of local deposits, which end in the destruction of the lungs, phthisis. In one-half of all cases acute lobar pneumonia is confined to the right lung, while broncho-pneumonia commonly assails both lungs. Before entering into the study of the pathological anatomy and pathogeny of broncho-pneumonia, for the sake of clear ness we must refer to the normal anatomy of the lungs. Excerpt from The Cleveland Medical Gazette, Vol. 16: November, 1900-December, 1901 Personally I have been in serious doubt many times as to which course would be the safest and most expedient. A few dis tressing delays have taught me that these abscesses may and can be Opened when quite small, and then even if pus is not found after the first attempt, the incision through the skin and superficial fas cia will relieve tension and add very materially to the patient's comfort and welfare. Excerpt from The Cleveland Medical Gazette, Vol. 2 The University of Prague is mainly noted for the excellent lying-in hospital connected with it, which is doubtless one of the largest in Europe. In former years, when the university was still wholly German, this used to be the Mecca of a large number of M. D.'s from all parts of the world, but the division into a Bohemian and a German department has greatly taken from the advantages of the place. Having dwelt more fully on this topic in another letter to the gazette (june, 1886) I will refer the reader to this and simply add that outside of obstetrics, Prague also offers good facilities in surgery and in dermatology. In fact, in this latter department, Professor Pick's clinics and private course are hardly to be excelled. Life in Prague is not so agreeable as in other European cities, for the reason that it is virtually a Bohemian city, and there is a constant Silent war between the German and Bohemian elements, which crops out in an unpleasant manner every now and then. The expense of living is cheaper in Prague than in any other European city of which I know, but the restaurant and boarding accommoda tions are also poorer. The majority of the pavements are miserable, making walking any distance very tiresome. To balance all this, Prague has a beautiful location and abounds in any number of places of great historical interest. Excerpt from The Cleveland Medical Gazette, Vol. 6 Finding I have occupied more time on the preliminary points than I expected, and being unable to abridge or give a synop sis of the letters from distinguished superintendents upon the murderous instincts of the insane, some of which I wish to attach, my paper is sufficiently long for an occasion like this. A condensation of the letters would not be fair to the able writers. I do not want to make them responsible for what some, doubtless, will consider my vagaries; except to the extent their letters indicate.
