Excerpt from A History of the City of San Francisco: And Incidentally of the State of California This book was written at the request of the committee appointed to manage the celebration in San Francisco of the Centennial Anniversary of the Declaration of our National Independence, in accordance with a resolution adopted by Congress on the thirteenth of March, 1876, recommending that in every town the delivery of a historical sketch of the place from its foundation should be part of the local celebration. It was considered better that, instead of a brief sketch to be read publicly in an hour, the metropolis on the American coast of the North Pacific should have a book of several hundred pages. The city furnishes material enough for a history which could never be prepared on a more appropriate occasion than in commemoration of the National Centennial year, especially since it happens to coincide with the completion of the first century in the existence of our city. Such a double epoch demanded some special mark of recognition. There are urgent reasons why works of this kind should be written by pioneers, and while there are still hundreds of pioneers living to furnish information from their personal reminiscences and from papers that will be lost when they die. Excerpt from The City That Was: A Requiem of Old San Francisco The climate of California is peculiar; it is hard to give an impression of it. In the region about San Francisco, all the forces of nature work on their own laws. There is no thunder and lightning; there is no snow, except a flurry once in five or six years; there are perhaps half a dozen nights in the winter when the thermometer drops low enough so that in the morning there is a little film of ice on exposed water Neither is there any hot weather. Yet most Easterners remaining in San Francisco for a few days remember that they were always chilly. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from History of California, From Its Discovery to the Present Time Beyond its own limits, comparatively little has been known of the particular history of its gold mines and mining grounds; of the toils, perils and success, of its miners; of their modes and operations of mining, and of the vast amount of capital which is invested in that adventurous business. Nor has a description of the magic city of San Francisco, as it now exists, of its moral, social and commercial state, -bef'ore been written and the public, at a distance from the scene, have been enabled to view it only in a faint and glimmering light. Excerpt from The Establishment of Municipal Government in San Francisco The events associated with the establishment of a municipal government in San Francisco extend over three quarters of a century, from the foundation of the Spanish pueblo, in 177 6, to the adoption of the city charter passed by the first legisla ture of the State of California, in 1851. Within this time it is possible to observe three somewhat clearly defined periods. The first is the period of Spanish settlement and stagnation; the second is the period of transition, extending from the Conquest to the adoption of the charter of 1850; the third period ends with the adoption of the charter of 1851.
