An acquaintance with that people in this country would give the missionary prestige when he entered upon his work. 6. One fitting for China in this field might succeed in enlisting Chinamen for the main work. 7. It would make the foreign work more real to many at home, to whom it is even yet vague and abstract. The reasons are manifold. The work is timely, and the field is ripe to the harvest. It seems to be a businesslike procedure, and not a mere sentimental scheme. And then, besides, such a determined effort by Protestant Christianity for the Chinaman would shut the mouth of the hoodlum demagogue, politician and press. Our theological seminary in San Francisco is in good shape to receive the stimulus such a scheme would warrant. It is in good condition to carry it out. A CHINESE NOBLEMAN. MBS. DK. MATEER, TUNGCHOW. Sung Foo Wei was born in the Pingtu district, in Shantung. His mother was a woman of good mind and naturally fine character. She was left motherless in her childhood, and thus suffered the greatest calamity that can befall a Chinese girl, viz., ahe had no one to teach her to bind her feet. His father was a small farmer, a man of weak character and addicted to gambling. When Sung Foo Wei was a lad of twelve, the gospel was first preached in bis native village. He and his mother from the first heard it gladly. He soon afterwards entered the boys' boarding-school in Tungchow. His talents and diligence soon raised him to the head of his classes, and his good lessons and good deportment always endeared him to his teachers. When being examined by the session for admission to the church, he was asked what had led him to decide to serve Jesus. His reply was because Jesus had loved him so much...

While working here he felt a call to preach the gospel to his fellow countrymen, and was received by the presbytery, and with other members of the mission I helped to give him his theological education, Dr. W. A. P. Martin giving him instruction in exegesis. He has a congregation of upwards of one hundred and twenty-four church members. On a recent Sabbath he paid a handsome tribute to the memory of the late Rev. H. V. Rankin, formerly of Ningpo. He spoke of his fidelity in his preaching, of his inviting the school-boys to his house to talk with them, and of the time when he (Mr. Bau) was under conviction and tried to shun Mr. Rankin's faithful talks; but he sought him out, and would not give him up till he had brought him to Christ. It is many years since this faithful missionary slept in his lonely grave on the Shantung promontory, overlooking the sea. Though he has ceased from his labors, the work has gone on, and the seed sown in that school-boy's heart has borne fruit. For more than a quarter of a century has Mr. Bau been a faithful preacher of the gospel--the first to get a foothold in the great city of Soochow and other places, and for many years the pastor of the First Presbyterian church in Shanghai. There are now nine vacancies in our work and if we are allowed to take up only a very little new work there are at least three new fields which must be supplied or lost by March. IOWA. Rev. T. 8. Bailey, Superintendent: --I have devoted a good deal of time to special efforts to stir up the churches to make larger contributions to the Board, and not without some success. Glidden goes from about $10 up to $60; Tranquility from $8 to $77.75; Boone has paid over $45, and has $60 or more in addition subscribed. The personal contribution of C. J. Stockdalc is virtually a bequest from his dying wife. So far as the general work is concerned, we have a good deal of encouragement, but our work is suffering in many places because of the necessary cutting down on the part of the Board. We are still pushing for self-support on the part of our churches with all our might. I have never done so much traveling and so much hard work in one quarter as during the last, in trying to push the grouping of churches. There are evidences of the presence of God's Spirit in many of our weak churches. We have two evangelists in the State, supported by the Presbyteries in which they labor, namely, Rev. A. R. Bickenback in Cedar Rapids Presbytery, and Rev. H. C. Keeley, now laboring in I lie bounds of Fort Dodge Presbytery, or more properly the Presbyteries of Fort Dodge and Sioux City, as now arranged. Our Bohemian teork in Cedar Rapids is starting out under quite favorable auspices. The new minister, seems to have been very warmly received. I have great hopes that this will prove the beginning of bet ter days for this class of our people. The Indian Mission house at Tama city is now completed and Miss...

This is the first scholarly treatment of nineteenth-century Christianity to discuss the subject in a global context. Part I analyses the responses of Catholic and Protestant Christianity to the intellectual and social challenges presented by European modernity. It gives attention to the explosion of new voluntary forms of Christianity and the expanding role of women in religious life. Part II surveys the diverse and complex relationships between the churches and nationalism, resulting in fundamental changes to the connections between church and state. Part III examines the varied fortunes of Christianity as it expanded its historic bases in Asia and Africa, established itself for the first time in Australasia, and responded to the challenges and opportunities of the European colonial era. Each chapter has a full bibliography providing guidance on further reading.
