Excerpt from The Chronicles of Middletown MY dear sir: Through the kindness of good friends in dear old Middletown, I have been permitted to read the articles published by you in the journal, entitled Chronicles of Middletown. To say that I have been interested, is to state very mildly the feeling of happi ness that I have experienced, in common with many others of the readers of the journal. We all owe you a debt of gratitude for your labor in searching out the old records, that will be but incompletely paid by the purchase of your forthcoming book. Human nature is sometimes slow in expressing its appreciation, and on this account I am all the more anxious to assure you of our gratitude for the good work you have done, and will continue to do. My residence in Middletown run from 1846 to 1862, and thus the most impressible years of my life were spent in association with Middletown people. A person remem bers the associates and scenes of youth long after he has forgotten those encountered in after years. During the early days of the War of the Rebellion, I was the only newsboy in the town, and was the first to carry papers from house to house, and to sell them on the streets; and in this way I came to know more than half the people in the town. I flatter myself that people liked to see me, in those days, not that they cared much for me, but they were anxious to get the papers, filled as they always were with news of the great war. If suggestions are in order, I should advise that your Chronicles include a history of the newspapers of the town. Excerpt from Middletown Valley in Song and Story The betting excited every one and when the two horses had been pitted against one another, the crowd could hardly contain itself. The signal was finally given and black and bay started off in one of the most spirited con tests ever witnessed on the Magruder track. It was a half-mile dash, with two heats. Excerpt from Chronicles of Old Riverby Since John Bradley, the inn-keeper, is an Old friend of mine, that is just the place for her, declared the judge. Rachel Winn, then a girl of seventeen, was tall and slight. Just a suggestion of rose ushed her cheeks, and the wealth of nut-brown hair plaited in two braids and coiled about her head simulated a coronet. There was nothing striking in her per sonal appearance except when some pathetic tale roused her sympathies; then the soft brown eyes were expressive of unusual depth of feeling. Excerpt from The Chronicle of an Old Town: A Novel S there any further business to consider? The chairman of the Board asked the question with the constrained, nervous manner of the man who knows only too well that there is further business to consider - unpleasant business. Followed a moment of strained silence, the while the chairman twirled a pencil nervously in his fingers, his eyes downcast upon it. The other men in the room, sitting very still, fixed their eyes vacantly on space, striving to look unconcerned. One of them glanced furtively' at another, but encountering the other's glance wavering in his direction he averted his face quickly, as though caught in a disreputable act. Some one shifted his position and the sound startled, rasping in the tense atmosphere of the room. The chairman started nervously, then made an effort to get himself in hand. But when he spoke his voice was querulous, fretful. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Chronicles of Waltham, Vol. 2 of 3 Nothing occurred, however, to alarm him. Once or twice, indeed, the shout of a drunken man, and the tread of persons traversing the road in front of the house, roused him, and he grasped his gun, without a pulse beating the quicker for the movement. But the sounds died away without giving place to others, and his vigilance gradually relaxed. At last he fell asleep in his chair, and woke again only when the stir of his people made him look up, that he might see everything, both within and without, in the very same order in which he had left it over-night. Excerpt from Rosetty Ends: Or the Chronicles of a Country Cobbler Dear Publisher, - You say you want a "Preface" for Rosetty Ends. I am afraid you cannot get it. It is a difficult thing to write a Preface. An orthodox Preface usually explains the high moral purpose which the author had in view, or the circumstances under which the book was written. I do not claim a high moral purpose for the book, and if readers discover evidences of such in its pages, it is at their own risk, and I wash my hands of all responsibility. It would be unwise to assert that the book has been issued to fill the felt want of a thoroughly reliable technical dissertation on the important subject of leather, because readers would promptly find out that the book was not built that way. The Art of the Reprint is a vivid and engaging history of the nineteenth-century novel as it was re-imagined for everyday readers by four extraordinary twentieth-century illustrators. It focuses especially on four reprints: a 1929 edition of Thomas Hardy's The Return of the Native (1878) with engravings by Clare Leighton, a 1930 edition of Herman Melville's Moby Dick (1851) with images by Rockwell Kent, a 1943 edition of Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre (1847) with woodblocks by Fritz Eichenberg, and a complete set of Jane Austen's novels (1786-1817) illustrated from 1957 to 1974 by Joan Hassall. Taken together, these reprints are indicative of a legacy crafted from historical distance, through personal, political, and artistic circumstance, and for a new century. With biographical, archival, and art- and literary-historical sources as well as close readings of images and texts, this is a richly illustrated account of how artists reinvent canons for the general reader.

Excerpt from The Widening Circle: A Chronicle Our grandparents were old-fashioned, they loved us dearly and cared for us tenderly, but they did not understand me very well. They thought I had queer ideas and uncanny ways Margaret, fat, round and jolly, they understood better - but they made us very happy in their own prim way, and left us to play our games together. The village where they lived was sleepy and old-world, four miles from the station, and seven from the market town. The Vicar had a numerous family of boys and girls with whom we played many a romping game, but as I said to Margaret, they play with their hands, but not with their minds. These and the little girls at the Hall, were the sole companions of our own age. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Clog Shop Chronicles Jabe's rejoinder being unusually fierce, even for him, it was clear that he disapproved of curiosity in this direction, and that the subject had better be dropped. Dropped at the Clog Shop, it was soon dropped everywhere else, for that establishment and its proprietor were the centres of public Opinion in the village.
