Hopson's service of Tenebrae follows a tradition of the early church dating back to the eighth century, and commemorates the final hours of Christ's life on earth as He prepared for and suffered death on the cross. Tenebrae: A Service of Darkness may be performed as a service in its entirety, or portions of the work may be extracted and performed separately throughout Holy Week. This exceptionally moving work is destined to become a staple in Holy Week repertoire for decades to come.

This book is Volume 2 of a three-part series on active/active systems. It describes techniques that can be used today for extending system failure times from years to centuries, often at little or no additional cost. As our daily lives and corporate well-being become more dependent upon computers, system reliability grows increasingly important. No longer are frequent system outages acceptable. In many cases, failure intervals must now be measured in centuries. Starting with a summary of Volume 1, techniques for achieving extraordinary availabilities are reviewed. These techniques use active/active architectures, in which multiple independent nodes using a common distributed database are cooperating in a common application. Should a node fail, all that is required is to switch the users on that node to a surviving node. Equally important to the achievement of high availability is the ability to upgrade the system hardware and software without denying service to the users. The procedures to do this within an active/active system are described. The secret to high availability is to let it fail, but fix it fast. This volume explores the server, database, and network redundancy techniques that allow fast-fix to happen. The cost considerations involved in such redundant architectures are also explored.

Conducting Women's Choirs: Strategies for Success is a pioneering yet practical book and DVD devoted to all aspects of the women's choir--a groundbreaking contribution and a true collaborative effort from top professionals in the field. Areas of focus include: working with beginning, high school, collegiate, and community women's choirs; improving the sound of women's choirs; suggested repertoire for women's choirs; composing for women's choirs; building community within the ensemble; warm-ups and rehearsal strategies; building excellence in women's choirs. Sections also focus on mentoring, auditions, seating arrangements, historical women's repertoire, healthy vocal development, gender issues, history, status of the women's choir, and much more. This book features research, practical insights, and round-table discussions. The included DVD demonstrates choral techniques and teaching ideas with two women's choirs: Aurora, from Luther College, conducted by Sandra Peter; and The University of Kentucky Women's Choir, conducted by Lori Hetzel [Publisher description]
