Electronics has been a Chinese pillar of success and is now the largest industry in China with growth of nearly twenty percent annually. China is the world's number one producer of TVs, recorders, DVD players, telephones, calculators, refrigerators, and air conditioners. China also has the number one cellular phone market, is number two in IC consumption, and is the third largest PC producer. Entry into the WTO is leading to economic liberalization, simplification of the licensing and foreign investment policies, and targeted government funding in electronics R&D. Massive incentives are being provided for electronics development projects and customs duties have been reduced on all electronics equipment. This report on China's electronics industry comprehensively documents the technologies, manufacturing, capabilities, and infrastructure that have made, and continues to make, China a major player in the electronics industry. This book provides data and reports on semiconductors, electronic packages, printed circuit boards, computer hardware and software, telecommunications, and various electronic systems. Other topics include the role of research government, associations, research organizations, educational institutions, science and technology information networks, as well as the pros and cons of western electronics companies establishing an infrastructure in China. The explosive growth of the Japanese electronics industry continues to be driven by a combination of market forces and the unique characteristics of the Japanese social organization and people. As an industrial phenomenon, the Japanese electronics industry receives considerable attention from researchers in various fields. However, most of their studies focus on either historical analyses intent on discovering the secret of the industry's enormous success, or on the issue of America's competitiveness in the face of challenges from Japanese technology. Moreover, none of these studies can be free of the bias that stems from each researcher's own upbringing and environment. The authors of The Japanese Electronics Industry have pooled their diverse experience and talents to create a balanced, objective study of this complex subject. They illuminate the history and characteristics of the industry, show the current state of the industry, and explore the research, development, and education vital to the future of the industry.

This book analyses how China's firms in the consumer electronics (CE) sector have developed their business strategy and corporate governance during the reform process. The CE sector is one of China's most important and dynamic manufacturing sectors. This new book is the first full account, inside or outside government, of China’s efforts to acquire foreign technology. Based on primary sources and meticulously researched, the book lays bare China’s efforts to prosper technologically through others' achievements. For decades, China has operated an elaborate system to spot foreign technologies, acquire them by all conceivable means, and convert them into weapons and competitive goods—without compensating the owners. The director of the US National Security Agency recently called it "the greatest transfer of wealth in history." Written by two of America's leading government analysts and an expert on Chinese cyber networks, this book describes these transfer processes comprehensively and in detail, providing the breadth and depth missing in other works. Drawing upon previously unexploited Chinese language sources, the authors begin by placing the new research within historical context, before examining the People’s Republic of China’s policy support for economic espionage, clandestine technology transfers, theft through cyberspace and its impact on the future of the US. This book will be of much interest to students of Chinese politics, Asian security studies, US defence, US foreign policy and IR in general.

"This Note describes and evaluates efforts in the People's Republic of China (PRC) to develop a modern electronics industry. It draws upon an extensive survey of primary and secondary sources on Chinese science and technology, interviews, and field research in China during November 1984; observations and reports from other visitors to the PRC; interviews with Chinese R & D personnel studying in the United States; and interviews with American businessmen involved in trade and technology relations with the PRC. It focuses on China's ability to introduce new products and processes in the R & D production system. The study suggests that, while many factors have impeded technological change, many of the obstacles seem more matters of infrastructure and management than of the availability of technology per se. The Chinese have introduced a number of reforms, with mixed results. On balance, the Chinese electronics industry has achieved noticeable gains in its pursuit of technological innovation, but their full effects are not likely to be felt for some time."--Rand abstracts
