DOWNLOAD EBOOKSince the 1990s, the Ankarana region of northern Madagascar has developed a reputation among globe-trotting gemstone traders and tourists as a source of some of the world's most precious natural wonders. Although some might see Ankarana's sapphire and ecotourist trades as being at odds with each other, many local people understand these trades to be fundamentally connected, most obviously in how both serve foreign demand for what Madagascar has to offer the world. Walsh explores the tensions and speculations that have come with the parallel emergence of these two trades with sensitivity and a critical eye, allowing for insights into globalization, inequality, and the appeal of the "natural." DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe children in Madagascar rejoice in life's natural gifts--singing, working in the fields, helping their parents, and playing with lizards. Divided into three sections: "We Live!," "We Grow!" and "We Feel!," Torina's World: A Child's Life in Madagascar offers a glimpse into daily life in a Malagasy village, and encourages children in Western cultures to examine and reflect on life in a developing country. Ten years ago, author and photographer Joni Kabana spent a month in Madagascar. Her intention was to bring back images for her children showing how other children live. Torina, an eight-year-old Malagasy girl, acted as Joni's guide into this world. Back home, Joni's nine-year-old son, Benjamin Opsahl, helped edit the images and added simple, yet profound text that will engage readers across the world. Torina is now eighteen. She still lives in a small hut with her mother, father and six brothers. Her desire to further her education has been hindered by a lack of financial resources, thus a portion of the proceeds from book sales will provide funding for her education as well as other educational activities in Madagascar. Celebrate diversity with Torina's World, and join with readers young and old in embracing a multi-cultural perspective. Not illustrated. 1887 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER X. TRUE STORIES OF MALAGASY CHILDREN. I.--A Story of the Persecutions. (Translated from a native account.) DURING the reign of Queen Rab6donandrianampoinimerina, a public proclamation was made that all the Christians, or ' praying people, ' as they were called, should accuse themselves to the government, and 'those who do not report themselves, ' said the word of the Queen, 'but whom I hear of from others, I shall consider as guilty.' When the time appointed in the Queen's proclamation arrived, an immense crowd of people assembled at Analakely, a plain to the north-west of the capital. Many of those who had professed Christianity came to report themselves, and some of the great officers of State were sent down by the Queen to hear their statements. Then those who were to accuse themselves came forward one by one, and some of them cursed and swore that they would not pray any more to that Jehovah, 'ancestor of the white men, ' and the majority of them professed that they would discontinue the praying altogether. At last a beautiful young girl came forward, who was the only daughter of her father and mother. When the chief of the Queen's officers saw her, he said: 'Tell me, girl: what do you mean by praying to these ancestors of the white men?' The child looked up at him and replied: 'When I look at your bloodshot eyes' (for the officer was a drunkard) ' and fierce countenance, and hear your dreadful voice, you would expect that I should tremble and have nothing to answer you, but give way at once; but look you, now you are sitting in judgment on me, but hereafter both you and I will be judged by Jesus Christ; now your eyes are red and terrible-looking, and every one who sees you is afraid, but I tell you that hereafter you will be
